Martin Paterson was again Burnley's goal-den boy as the Clarets eased into the second round of the Carling Cup.

The £1m-plus summer signing paid off another installment of his fee with two goals to sink battling Bury at rain-lashed Gigg Lane.

Paterson finished off a magnificent move five minutes from half time to sink the League Two side, who mounted a brave second half fight back.

But Owen Coyle's side stood firm and after a fantastic double save from Brian Jensen, Paterson struck again in the final minute to end an unbeaten home record stretching back to February.

Manager Owen Coyle - bizarrely the third successive Burnley manager to start his League cup campaign against the Shakers - made three changes to the starting 11 that lost 4-1 at Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

Brian Jensen, Christian Kalvenes and Joey Gudjonsson came in for Diego Penny, Michael Duff and Remco van der Schaaf, who all dropped to the bench among the seven subs.
