It's like a new school day

Posted on: Mon 06 Jul 2009

It's my first day and I've had a good look around, and after watching Bury closely over the back end of last season, there was only really one choice for me.  I have been speaking to other clubs over the summer but it would have meant moving house and everything, but I felt Bury were on the 'up' under the coaching and management staff so I obviously chose to come here and I'm quite pleased with it."

"It was an easy decisions, I'm a family man with two young kids.  Bury isn't far from me and I wanted to stay local.  The other teams that were interested were two or three hours away, but it wasn't just that.  It was more for the footballing side of things.  I know that Bury play very good football and once I got together with the manager I chose to come here."

"I saw the two games on Sky in the play offs and thought I wanted to be a part of that but to be honest there was a bit of interest around January with a few clubs showing some interest but I just wanted to get my head down and keep on playing well for Chester by scoring goals.  Bury were one of those clubs and obviously I wanted that to continue and I had to perform against Bury.  The manager here said that I had done well against Bury over the years and that was an incentive for me.  You only have to look at the lads here, I've only been here ten minutes and the banter is going.  It's good for me and hopefully we can just push on from last season."

"The club missed promotion by one goal last season, and the lads have already caned me for that goal here.  They have reminded me all about it so you don't have to tell me about it, but that was my job and to try and keep Chester in the football league.  I tried my best but just couldn't do it on my own.  It was unfortunate but now I have to pay Bury back with goals whilst I am here."

"Last season was more than enough to forget.  I don't have to describe how it went, nobody likes to be relegated but I loved Chester City and every time I put the shirt on I gave it 110%.  Every team that I've played for, I've always gone out and give it 110%.  Now I want to do that for Bury, it's a new start for me and I want to be doing well here."

"There's a good similarity between me and Stephen Dawson, he was relegated out of the league yet came here and missed promotion by one goal, he was also named player of the season.  You only have to look at the players around you here and the goals that they have scored, the chances that they created.  It wasn't like that at Chester, you had to go out and find your own goals and create your own chances.  I'm not saying that we are going to score 100's of goals but if you are creating chances, then you have to score a couple of them - at least one in three.  I hope there are good times ahead and I hope I'm part of that."

"You look in the dressing room and we have four good strong strikers here, but that's what you need.  You need that competition for places.  I've had clubs where you've always got that but there was none of that at Chester last season.  There was no-one when you looked over your shoulder and thought I had to keep playing well, there was no-one after my shirt, but this year is going to be tough.  There are four of us but only two can play.  We all know it, Andy Bishop and Andy Morrell were here last season but Danny Carlton and myself want to play as well."

"I scored 18 goals last season but probably should have had about 25 to be honest with the missed chances.  I was fortunate enough to get 18 goals so I am looking forward to getting going this season now.  Bish also got 18 goals but there will be no competition between us.  I'll have my own little competition in my head but none between each other.  We all want to do well for the team and the club.  Whoever plays will be wished the best from the rest of us and hopefully we will do the business."

"I do set myself targets but I never reveal what those targets are.  I like to keep those targets to myself.  I've refused to take squad number nine.  I'm not saying it puts pressure on you, some people might like to have that pressure but as number nine you're an out and out striker.  In a nutshell, I turned number nine down.  Danny Carlton has number nine but I was the first to sign and the gaffer asked me what number I wanted.  I didn't want number nine so he told me we would leave it, but I've come in today to find I am number 15 and I've happy with that."

"I didn't really know much about the gaffer but I have spoken to people about him.  I've been speaking to Elliott Bennett quite a lot and he's been telling me how good he is and how good he is around the lads.  I think he's a lad's manager, he's a man manager and he wants the lads to do well.  When I met him he was talking about the players that he's got.  You only have to look when Chester played against Bury, he's not a shouter or a baller.  He's very calm and he wants to win all the time.  He's a young manager and we've seen throughout the summer that he's been linked with lots of clubs because he's done a great job here.  If the players are doing well for him and he is doing well for the players then it will work both ways."

"It's like a new day at school for me today, I enjoy pre-season and can't wait to get going."
