Sodje on pre season

Posted on: Fri 10 Jul 2009

"Pre season is going well and my summer has been funny with all sorts of strange things happening.  I travelled to Greece on holiday but when I returned to the UK I had my passport seized, but it was all good in the end because I did get it back before I went home to Nigeria."

"Apparently my passport had been reported stolen, but when I asked who had reported it stolen they said the 'owner', but I'm the owner and I've never reported it stolen.  I had to prove that I was the Efe Sodje but they still let me through immigration.  They asked me if I was Efe Sodje and I said dam right I am!!"

"The disappointment from last season has gone, and for me, I was really annoyed with it because I really wanted to get the promotion to keep my record going, but not only for me, but for the club as well because the club has been doing well.  From the pre-season training that we have done so far, you can tell that the boys are focussed."

"Pre season is going well, there's been plenty of running and I'm still there, I haven't died yet.  The gaffer thinks that I am old but I am running well.  I'm still very young and he may even be thinking about giving me another two year contract because of the way I am running."

"We are just going to do what we did last season and that's one game at a time.  We are not going to rush it, we know the mistakes that we made from last season and we are all still learning.  Obviously the gaffer knows what is needed because he is a good manager and he knows what to do.  We will take it game by game.  There is no thinking about two games down the line.  The first game we are thinking about is Bournemouth and nothing else."

"I was surprised about how early we are playing Everton.  I was at home and saw it on Sky TV that Everton were coming to Bury and I wondered if there was another Bury somewhere then I realised it was us.  It's good for the club because we have made a name for ourselves.  These clubs know that we play good football and that we have a good manager, we also need the supporters.  Last year we had an extra thousand supporters, now we want more right from the start of the season.  Everton are bringing a good squad and that will test us, we will know where we are, it may only be four days into pre-season - but that's football."

"We have the new kit as well, I may even be getting some new bandanas.  They will be coming out so I want people going out to buy them."

"The Sodje Sports Foundation is myself and my family.  We are building an academy back in Nigeria.  We all started in Nigeria and playing in Nigeria and we simply want to give something back.  The idea is to get under privileged kids to come in and train and get some education.  It's not just about football.  We will have an academy for everything, education, how life is about and everything and that's the main reason why we are building the academy."

"We have organised this charity match on 26 July at Sheffield Wednesday and are playing the Sheffield legends.  We have a lot of people coming to play.  We even have lots of people phoning up asking if they can come and join us to play in the game.  We have the Artic Monkeys, the Reverand Makers, Jarvis Cocker. Cyril Regis, Dwight Yorke, Kanu.  We've also got Harvey from Soul solid crew and Leo form Love Island.  We've got a lot of people coming down."

"The main man is also there - Alan Knill is our manager for the day plus Chris Brass and Andy Bishop will be appearing as well.  The gaffer is the manager of the African side, he has always said that he was meant to be black - now he is.  It will be a nightmare for him controlling six Sodje's, never mind just me.  I've told him that he will meet us all and he said that he doesn't want to because he knows there will be trouble plus my parents are also going to be there."

"We've never played together as brothers before, so this will be a first for all of us.  It said on the BBC that six Sodje's would be on show.  It wont be six because Bright is a rugby player so we've begged him not to play because we don't want to break anybodies back so he's going to wear the suits and look after the other stuff."

"The game is on 26 July, it all starts at 10:00am because Sheffield Wednesday are having an open day as well.  Tickets are only £5.00 and I'd like to see some Bury fans there."
