The result counts for nothing

Posted on: Sat 11 Jul 2009

"A game like that does you the world of good for confidence.  The lads have put in a good shift there and we've been busy in training all week, we looked quite sharp.  I can't really say that I am surprised how Bish and myself played together.  We have four good strikers here and you tend to click together straight away when you are playing with good players'.  That's not just me and Bish; it will probably be all of us all throughout the season.  It's a difficult pick for the manager to make."

"Its great for competition for places and you have to be on your toes from the go.  It's good to have that competition.  Its good to beat a premiership side, the gaffer was saying to just go out and enjoy it and the lads have put in a good shift."

"The second half was terrific, Everton did put a few young lads out but they were still good players, they would probably play in most teams in our division but it was a good shift and it's nice to get 65 minutes under my belt."

"You have to learn to keep the ball because with players of just quality, if you lose it you won't see it for a while.  I kept telling Bish just to drop off.  They are a quality team and they belong in the Premiership. It was good experience for us and it can only help us."

"The manager would rather have eased us in at Radcliffe on Monday but you cant turn games down like this.  I was on holiday when I heard that we were playing Everton and the first thought was that I had better get some more runs in, but it's a good thing to play Premiership opposition and we will have to do the same against Radcliffe on Monday night."

"I do monitor my games as I am playing, Danny Carlton put a great cross in just before the goal and I got in there too early.  I was getting in too early in training earlier today as well.  We were working on crossing and finishing and I never scored one goal on Friday morning.  You've got to know when you've done wrong.  I knew that I hadn't got in early enough but for the goal I got across him, Danny put a great cross in and I just guided it into the net."

"No disrespect to Everton, they may have eased off a little.  It wasn't a cup final and some people may say it was a cup final for us.  Not necessarily, but it's still good to go out there and beat the likes of Everton."

"I'm a Liverpool fan and I looked into the stand at my Mum, my sister and my little Nephew.  He's an Everton fan and she told me that he was crying so I can't wait to get home and give him a little bit of stick.  Its good being a Liverpool fan but it does count for nothing."

"As a striker you want to score early goals at a new club, its always nice, but your always going to get goals and most strikers will tell you that they will create and score goals.  That's what I will always tell the press, but it's a goal, it gets me off the mark and hopefully there is plenty more to come."

"Its all geared for Bournemouth in a few weeks time, but we have just got to keep performing, keep training hard as we have been and we all look forward to the Bournemouth game.  It may have only been a week but we have done a lot of ball work, but we've also done quite a lot of track work as well.  It's been interesting but its been good as well.  The lads are enjoying it and the gaffer has been top class to be fair.  The lads are putting a shift in and I think the gaffer is happy."

"On Monday, Radcliffe are going to want to beat us.We are the local side for them, so we will have to be on our toes.  The result counts for nothing, it's all about fitness but it is nice to get a win under our belts."
