We know that we can do better

Posted on: Sun 08 Aug 2010

'It was a good game, but obviously disappointing because we got beat.  In patches we were good and we played some football.  We started the second half a bit sloppy and we didn't click around the box like we have done in pre-season.  We lacked that spark but all in all we have to be confident.

We are a good young side, it's the first game of the season and we are only going to get better.  We had six debuts today and its not going to happen over night.  There was bits and spells throughout the game that you could tell we will be a good side.  We get the ball down and we play but I think we need to have that aggressive side to our game.  We need to get the ball back before we can start playing.  We have to earn the right to play.  Port Vale were a very physical side, but I thought we were a better side than them.

We did it in the first half and they more than likely got a bit of a rollicking of their gaffer, but we should have come out a lot better.  We got back into the game in the second half, but we need to be better around the box, we need that bit of luck and it didn't fall for us, but we will get back on the training ground and get it sorted.

They had just two debutants out there and they are a similar side to last season but I think we can bring some confidence out of that game.  We were the better team, and if we played them again tomorrow, and we got the first goal, we could probably beat them 4-0 and kill them off.

Andy Haworth has been brilliant in pre-season for us and as soon as he gets going, he will be some player.  I'm glad that I'm not the one marking him; I think I'd just have to nail him.

It would have been nice to get the win in the first game of the season, but there are 45 games now and we know that we have got a good side and that we can battle away.  We just have to make sure that we go into the next game with confidence and hopefully get the win.

I'm a Manchester lad and have worked with the gaffer before when he was at Chesterfield. I was very impressed with him there and I've always got on with him.  I like the way he plays the game so it was an easy choice for me to come here.  The lads are brilliant and it's a good club.  This is probably the best I have felt throughout my career, it's a well organised club and for me, it's onwards and upwards now.

As for being released by Chesterfield, I saw it coming.  A lot of people tell me they were surprised by it.  John Sheridan wanted to be judged on his own players and he inherited me.  The change is better for me and since I have come here and I am feeling really good so all in all it's a good thing for me.  First and foremost I am here to defend, but if I can get in the space to get the ball into the box then I will do it.  The strikers won't be too happy if I don't.

Now it's Sheffield Wednesday, all the lads are looking forward to it and it's a fantastic stadium to play in.  It will be good for us and hopefully a good atmosphere.  Hopefully we can pull a shock out of the game.  We have a good side and we know that we can play.

We just have to get at them, and obviously if we get that bit of luck with Lowey and Bish, who are two quality players, there is 40 goals between them.  We cant be down about this defeat, the gaffer has just told us that we have to be confident so we will go into the next game and be confident.'
