Bury 2 Everton 1
By Work Experience Daniel Taylor
Bury's first pre-season game of season 2009/10 season saw a strong Europa League Everton side visit Gigg Lane. Bury supporter Phil Neville led his team out at Gigg Lane for the pre-season game which saw Bury trialists Simon Johnson feature having been at Leeds, Darlington and Hereford. Both sets of fans turned out in their numbers to see their team perform for the first time over a long season which will stretch up until the middle of May, hopefully being a successful one for the Shakers improving even more on the back of last season and finish the job in style, hopefully gaining promotion to League 1. Both teams were coming into this game on top of major disappointments, Bury missing out on promotion by one goal and then missing out in the play-offs on penalties, whilst Everton losing to Chelsea at the F.A.Cup at Wembley.
Both teams have tough league starts ahead of them with Bury's first three games being Bournemouth at home under the management of the youngest manager in the league Eddie Howe. Bury then face two tough games on their travels to Darlington before facing a trip to relegated Hereford United on Tuesday 18th August. David Moyes' Everton face Arsenal at home on the 15th August followed by newly promoted Burnley away followed by Wigan Athletic at home with both Europa League play off legs being either side of them.
The players were welcomed onto the Gigg Lane pitch by a cracking atmosphere with both sets of fans erupting into their clubs songs. Everton started the game kicking left to right with blue shirts, white shorts and white socks. Bury kicking right to left with white shirts, blue shorts and blue socks.
Bury started the game with a Ryan Lowe shot just creeping the wrong side of the post nearly finishinga well worked move starting with Richie Baker and Simon Johnson beforegood link up play by Andy Bishop and Ryan Lowe before the shot putting the ball just wide of the post.
As the game proceeded the Bury strikers and players got more confident and created chances which were good efforts mostly taken by new striker Ryan Lowe, with one of them being a chance hit strongly at the keeper Carlo Nash after more good play by Andy Bishop and Ryan Lowe.
After 13 minutes Everton created their first chance of the game after a neat pass by youngster Dan Gosling set up Louis Saha who's shot was well saved by Wayne Brown from point blank range. Shortly after Everton's Louis Saha worked his way passed the Bury defenders before firing high into the Manchester Road End. Everton created another chance after 18 minutes when James Vaughan used some silky skill before curving the ball just over the crossbar.
The first game goal of the game came on the 23rd minute after a free kick was awarded against Stephen Dawson wide left of the Bury penalty area, the free kick was curled in beautifully which was met by the head of Louis Saha which nestled into the bottom right hand corner which Wayne Brown couldn't reach, it was a well worked free kick by Everton that brought the first goal of the game.
The game endured a quiet spell before trialists Simon Johnson ran down the middle before threading Ryan Lowe in one on one with Carlo Nash before some great defending by Seamus Coleman which took the ball out of Ryan Lowe's path and out for a corner. Off the resulting corner another corner was cleared before a short corner between Danny Racchi and Stephen Dawson didn't come off.
On the 36th minute mark Everton created a chance with a good cross fro James Vaughan from the left was met by Dan Gosling before Wayne Brown claimed after a mini goal line scramble between Wayne Brown, David Buchanan and of course Dan Gosling.
The Bury fans really got behind the team and the support seemed to have been acting as a 12th man and after 41 minutes we began to see a lot more of Ryan Lowe as his 20 yard curling shot was tipped around the post by experienced goalkeeper Carlo Nash, never the less some more good play by the Shakers brought more confidence amongst the Bury players.
The first half was action packed with the score being 1-0 to Everton following a Louis Saha header off a Leighton Baines free kick. Chances however were even and the second half was sure to be the same.
Substitutions were made amongst Everton, making 7 changes to be precise with Dan Gosling, Jose Baxter, Seamus Coleman and Shane Duffy the only players to start the second half who also started the first half. Bury on the other hand made two changes with Danny Racchi and Ryan Cresswell making well and being replaced by Efe Sodje and Michael Jones. Bury's subs bench still consisted of no less than four trialists along with three first team players.
On the 52nd minute saw trialists Gary Frewan replacing an impressive Simon Johnson in a straight swap. Gary Frewen nearly made an impressive entrance as the ball was snatched away from him at the far post from Tony Hibbert after a great driven cross by Danny Carlton.
On the hour markBury made another four changes with Cameron Belford replacing Wayne Brown, Brian Barry-Murphy replaced Stephen Dawson and also two trialists, Paul Innes and Dean Stott replaced Paul Scott and David Buchanan with Dean Stottplaying right back and Paul Innesat left back.
After 64 minutes Bury equalised with a cracking header from Ryan Lowe off a great Danny Carlton cross sending the Bury fans into raptures . The cross came into the box from near the corner flag on the right wing before being met by a powerful header by Ryan Lowe that Iain Turner couldn't get near.
With the score at 1-1, Bury's goalscorer Ryan Lowe and Ben Futcher made way to be replaced by Domaine Rouse and trialists centre back Bryon Webster.
Shortly after the attendance had been announced as 3,226 with 1,376 from Everton a corner came in from Michael Jones, a couple of heads missed the ball before Efe Sodje headed the ball into the top corner despite the efforts on the post from Dan Gosling. If the first sent the Bury fans into raptures the second goal was met by an incredible amount of noise from the Bury supporters. The fan favourite ran off with his arms aloft before clapping towards the Bury fans with his name being chanted by the supporters. The goal was scored on the 69th minute topping off a terrific five minutes for the shakers.
On the 74th minute, youth team player Luke McCarthy replaced Richie Baker on the right side of midfield with Michael Jones moving into the centre alongside Brian Barry-Murphy.
Everton fans endured their best moment on the 81st minute when an Everton supporter ran on the pitch and took the corner flag and tried to make his way home with it. Moments later a triumphant steward appeared from behind the MRE with said corner flag in hand.
Bury carried on with the confidence that they had gained throughout the match and substitute Domaine Rouse tested keeper Iain Turner who saved low down to his left. Everton had created some chances which came to no effect, this was a mixture of poor attacking and some great defending which consisted of three trialists which will please manager Alan Knill. The strikers also impressed with Danny Carlton assisting one goal and Ryan Lowe converting Carlton's assist.
The game finished 2-1 with a great performance by Bury. Bury supporters should be proud of their side and was appreciated by a standing ovation and rightly so. This result left Bury supporters proud and the feeling of the new season was anticipated. Bury won the game 2-1 and the trialists will give manager Alan Knill a headache on signing them. A great result for the Shakers was topped off by profit made in gate receipts.
