Nine trialists, two first year pro's and a player that missed the best part of last season started the Shakers second pre-season game of the 2010/11 season. On a rain lashed Stainton Park, the difference in quality between the two sides wasn't that far apart as the home side crossed the line with a 1-0 win.
It took both sides around ten minutes to get themselves going, with the Shakers showing the early touches.Kyle Bennett, on trial after being released from Wolves and younger brother of former Shakers loanee Elliott Bennett, showed some flair, trickery and pace. His flick to knock the ball over his marking defender, his drop of the shoulder to leave the defender floundering and his raw pace in taking the ball forward had the crowd drooling for more, his through ball to fellow trialist Duane Samuels though just too quick as he was flagged offside.
Bury had the ball in the back of the Radcliffe net two minutes later.Bennett again showed some skill with his ball into the middle for Craig Mahon, his quick flick found Danny Carlton - the only first team senior player to get a run out - Carlton poked the ball into the back of the net over the advancing keeper, only to turn and see the offside flag raised.
A further two minutes into the game and you really thought that Bury were beginning to stamp their authority on the game.A ferocious long range drive from Sam Hewson flew straight and direct on target, unfortunately though straight at the home keeper.
Duane Samuels produced more flair on 15 minutes to take the ball down the flank; his cross into the box was quickly smashed out for a corner.Former Shaker Simon Whaley's delivery was met by a strong header from Danny Carlton who powered his header towards the opposite goal.He was to be thwarted again though by former Bury skipper Martyn Forrest who smashed it off the line and away for another Bury corner. From Whaley's second corner, Kyle Bennett smashed the ball high over the bar.
Sam Hewson took another long range drive on goal on 25 minutes, though this time his ball rose and rose before eventually clearing the cross bar, and the row of houses behind the Stainton Park Stadium.
On 40 minutes Danny Carlton was hacked to the floor on the edge of the box.Bennett and Samuels took the free quick quickly, perhaps too quickly as the home defence quickly latched on and cleared the ball up the field.
Spanish U19 Alexsis Urueña Cembrero replaced Sam Hewson at half time, but it wasn't long before the home side had the lead.A good ball into the Bury box found an unmarked Tom Brooks who powered his half volley beyond Richie Branagan for the only goal of the game.
Bury raised their game, and within two minutes Craig Mahon had a shot straight down the keepers throat, a free kick moments later saw Adam Kay fire the set piece straight into the Radcliffe Wall.A deep Simon Whaley curling cross on 62 minutes found Mahon diving to connect with his forehead, only for the home keeper to somehow collect the ball at the last moment.
Whaley shot on goal on 70 minutes, but only managed to fire the ball against the top of the stand whilst two minutes later Danny Carlton fired hopelessly wide and above the target from the edge of the box.
Kenny Strickland tested the keeper twice within three minutes with some impressive close ball control as he cut across the box on both occasions, before firing tamely at goal.
With the rain pouring down, the final action of the game saw Max Harrop replace Duane Samuels with two minutes of the game left.
The aim of the game was to test the trialist's in match conditions, and on that basis, it gave the manager and his staff plenty to think about. Some impressed greatly, some not so.Alan Knill and Chris Brass saw their decisions made a little clearer on Tuesday night.Just which trialists are still here for the Huddersfield game remains to be seen.
