Bury 1 Huddersfield Town 1

Posted on: Sat 17 Jul 2010

An early move from the Shakers in the 3rd minutes brought some neat quick passing from Jones & Schumacher.  Haworth took control of the ball and ran through the visitors defence before laying off a shirt pass to Lowe, but his cross was far too deep to have any affect and it drifted harmlessly wide of the target.

Huddersfield almost put the ball in their own goal on five minutes; a back pass from Kay crawled past his own keeper and luckily for them, into the side netting for a very cheap corner.Sweeney's delivery into the box caused all sorts of problems for the Terriers before they happily smashed the ball out for a second corner.  Sweeney again delivered the ball into the box but it was better dealt with by the visitors and cleared to Haworth. The former Blackburn youngster took charge and delivered a curling effort into the box but it flew harmlessly into the side netting.

Gudjonnson showed some good work on the edge of the box on eight minutes before finally pushing it through to Theo Robinson, but an offside flag from the far side official killed the move dead.Belford's quick delivery down the field found Bishop; his quick pass to Haworth produced another good run and cross come shot that keeper Smithies just held onto.

Huddersfield took the lead on 10 minutes from a deep corner, the ball flew through to Graham Carey on the corner of the box, and his drilled shot deceived everyone and flew underneath Cameron Belford for the opening goal, though it has to be said, against the run of play.

Huddersfield won a free kick on 12 minutes from a foul by Futcher on Rhodes.Carey's free kick though flew wide of the target. From the restart Bury got the ball forward to Haworth who absolutely lamped it into the chest of Anthony Kay, Bishop got the rebound wide to Lowe who then won a free kick in the corner after a push by Carey. Sweeney's delivery was met by the head of Ryan Lowe, but his effort flew over the bar.

The game was stopped on 20 minutes after Jordan Rhodes collected an injury fro a Futcher challenge. After two or three minutes though, Rhodes left on a stretcher with Robbie Simpson coming off the bench to replace him.

Graham Carey continued to cause problems on 23 minutes with a curling effort into the Bury box that luckily curled away from Robinson and harmlessly out for a goal kick.Bury turned on the style moments later with Haworth and Bishop combining before releasing Samuels forward.Given the chance to show his pace, the former West Brom right back was flagged offside.

Bury built another good move together on 28 minutes with Schumacher getting enough revs on the ball to find Ryan Lowe out wide.  Lowe's delivery into the box was pushed out for a Bury corner.  From the corner, Schumacher delivered a peach of a ball that found the head of Andy Bishop, and his near post header beat both defender and keeper to find the back of the net to make it all square.

Bury continued to force the ball around the field with good gusto and another good move on 36 minutes found Andy Bishop out wide, his high lofted ball into the box looked to be an easy take for keeper Smithies, but a challenge came in from Ryan Lowe that made the catch more difficult, though in the end, the keeper claimed the ball under pressure from Lowe.

A succession of Huddersfield corners on 42 minutes saw the Bury defence comfortably deal with everything that the visitors threw at them, including a piledriver from Gudjonnson that smashed into the back of Ben Futcher.

A robust challenge from Efe Sodje on the stroke of half time on Huddersfield's Robbie Simpson brought the first half to a close at one goal a piece.

Phil Picker, former Chesterfield, replaced Dwayne Samuels at the break and the players re-entered the field to bright sunlight with the heavy rain having left.

Bury began brightly with a ball knocked across the middle of the park, Lowe stepped over the ball allowing Sweeney to shoot from distance, but his effort rose high over the bar.

Bury could have taken the lead on 52 with some excellent skills inside the box, jinking one way then the other and showing some good close control, he eventually ran out of room and played the ball out wide for Joe Skarz, his curling ball into the box though was well dealt with by the visitors who smashed it down the field.

A Huddersfield corner on 59 minutes brought more good defending from the Bury back line with Andy Bishop getting the final ball clear, though out for another corner, the second delivery was met by the head of Picken who powerfully headed it over the Manchester Road End.

A Bury throw deep in the visitors half almost produced a shot on goal on 61 minutes, Howarth played the ball towards Sweeney, but just a little too short and the chance was lost.  More passing football from the Shakers on 64 minutes produced a Bury corner, with Skarz and Sweeney producing some telling balls.  Sweeney's delivery into the box brought the visitors defence into action and they quickly countered the Bury attack with the ball eventually going to a Huddersfield free kick following a foul by Picken.

Kyle Bennett produced a moment of excitement on 67 minutes with a stunning shot on goal, Keeper Smithies handled the ball well though did fumble it with Bishop bearing down.  David Worrall showed a pair of quick feet on 69 minutes by clipping the ball forward to Bishop.  As Bishop was flagged offside though, the referee pulled the game back for a foul on Worrall.

Bury continued to pressure, despite making six substitutions.  Danny Hudson played a superb ball into the box that Danny Carlton swung at but missed, the resulting clearance fell to Max Harrop but his long range effort just rose an inch over the bar.

Cameron Belford pulled off a stunning save on 79 minutes when Jamie McCombe fired a stunning shot at goal from ten yards, Belford dived quickly and palmed the ball away to safety to keep the Shakers in the game.  Alexsis and Kyle Bennett both continued to impress on 84 minutes, the former Spanish U19 midfielder won a free kick after a late challenge, whilst Bennett (Junior) showed a pair of quick feet to lay the ball out wide to Skarz, though his driven ball across the box was slightly overhit.

Overall, a good Bury performance against a side playing in a higher league.  Alan Knill can be nothing but happy following this game.
