Bury started the game brightly with a quick surge forward involving Picken, Howarth and Ryan Lowe.Howarth's slow ball into the box though for Ryan Lowe failed to meet the target with former Bury loanee Kasper Schmeichel watching the ball fizz over the line.
Leeds' first move up the field came on two minutes with Bessone playing a good ball forward to find Johnny Howson, but his long range effort curled high over Cameron Belford's goal.It took the visitors another seven minutes to fashion their next chance, Bradley Johnson collecting the ball on the half way line, he moved forward and stung the palms of Cameron Belford from a full 25 yards, though the stop from the Bury keeper was more than comfortable.
A cheeky run across the Leeds box from David Worrall a minute later brought an easy stop from Schmeichel, though in fairness, Worrall was always under some pressure from Bessone.Andy Haworth's continuing mission to impress many was further in evidence on 14 minutes with a jinking run into the Leeds box though this time the sheer number of Leeds defenders thwarted him.
Moments later Snodgrass took the ball to the by-line for Leeds and only a late tackle from Joe Skarz prevented the cross. The resulting corner was met by the head of Johnson, whose downwards header bounced up of the bar and into a small melee.Peter Sweeney got his foot around the ball though and cleared.
Leeds should have done better on 19 minutes when a deep cross from Snodgrass found Johnson high above trialist Phil Picken, though the former Chesterfield defender somehow managed to push the ball out for a corner. The delivery into the box from that corner saw Grella flash a powerful header just wide of the post.
Bury continued to harass the Leeds midfield with only the occasional breakthrough, once such surge forward came on 31 minutes with Jones and Haworth zipping the ball between themselves, though the final ball into the box for Schumacher was just too high for the former Crewe man to get his head onto.
Bury should have taken the lead on 34 minutes when a sweeping Schumacher clearance down the wing found David Worrall in full charge, his first time ball into the box for Ryan Lowe saw last seasons leading scorer fail to connect properly the his tame effort on goal just drifted wide.
The shakers did take the lead a minute later with Jones paying a clever ball out wide from the corner of the box to David Worrell; his cross into the box deceived the Leeds defence as he cut it back towards Ryan Lowe.Lowey took one shot and flashed it across Schmeichel to find the back of the net.
Goal:Bury 1 Leeds United 0 (Ryan Lowe34)
Buoyed by the goal, Bury came forward again minutes later with Andy Haworth again impressing many, this time he took the ball to the touchline and fizzed it into the box, Ryan Lowe connected well with a diving header but could only zip the ball out of play for a Leeds goal kick.
Leeds went on in search of an equaliser with a deft run down the flank from Snodgrass that Joe Skarz clipped out for a corner.Ben Futcher used his height well though and cleared the delivery with a powerful header, but it came straight back from a rasping drive from Howson that fortunately for Bury, rose all the way until he back of the stand stopped it.
Half Time:Bury 1 Leeds United 0
Bury should have doubled their lead within a minute of restarting the game, a quick breakaway from David Worrall underneath the newly named Les Hart Stand saw his curling ball into the box find Andy Haworth, and with room to spare, the former Blackburn youngster took a touch and attempted to place it into the top corner but got his directions wrong and the ball flew out for a goal kick.
Bury continued to press and on 50 minutes won a corner after a stern shot from Mike Jones was pushed out for a corner, the short corner from Haworth found Steven Schumacher who fired at goal from an acute angle, but Schmeichel was equal to the shot and saved the effort.
Robert Snodgrass picked up on a Joe Skarz stumble on 53 minutes. As the Bury defender took the ball on his chest, he slipped allowing the Leeds midfielder to take it forward, he took one touch and fired the ball over Belford's bar with players in space either side of him.
Kasper Schmeichel produced two smart stops from Mike Jones and Ryan Lowe in quick succession, both chances coming from a quick break and both from shots on the corner of the Leeds box.In both cases, the Leeds keeper was forced to palm shots away to safety.Soon after Alan Knill made five changes to the Bury side with Mozika, Carlton, Bishop, Samuels and Bennett coming into the game.
Bury doubled their lead on 63 minutes.Damien Mozika clipped the ball forward towards Bishop, his deft flick and touch found Carlton who quickly poked it forward.Andy Bishop took two touches and fired the ball under the advancing Kasper Schmeichel to make it 2-0.
Goal:Bury 2 Leeds United 0 (Andy Bishop 63)
Bury had the ball in the back of the Leeds goal again on 67 minutes when more good work from Andy Bishop found David Worrall surging forward, the final ball though was just too early and as the ball hit the back of the net - up went the offside flag killing the goal dead.
A quickly taken free kick from Snodgrass wasn't quick enough for Cameron Belford as the shot was well saved by the Bury keeper, and with the visiting supporters drifting out of Gigg Lane, Bury looked full value for their 2-0 lead..
Leeds continued to apply pressure and on 78 minutes a Leeds corner found the head of Neil Collins, his bullet header though brought a stunning save from Cameron Belford who managed to tip it onto the post and away for another corner. Leeds then had a shot on goal blocked by Schumacher before another shot came fizzing in that flew out of play off the post.
Bury made it 3-0 when the ball fell to Danny Hudson on the edge of the box, his quick ball into the box found Danny Carlton who gleefully rammed it home to kill the game dead for the visitors.
Goal: Bury 3 Leeds United 0 (Danny Carlton 83)
With a minute to the final whistle, Max Harrop was brought crashing down in the Leeds box, ref Andy Penn pointed straight at the spot. Andy Bishop duly despatched the ball beyond Schmeichel for his second goal of the night to make it 4-0.
