Have Rochdale adopted the Scouse accent? It certainly seems that way this week with John Coleman and Jimmy Bell stepping into the breech at Spotland. Not only is the rivalry between Dale & Bury back in our lives for another weekend, but the always friendly rivalry between Mr Coleman and his adoring Bury fans - both will be back to normal levels on Saturday.
All rivalries aside though, there's a massive wrong that has to be corrected. That performance at Gigg Lane earlier in the season - without doubt the worst performance of the season from the Shakers. The lads are slightly keen to address that performance and put things right.
Decisions have been ratified over the week, everyone now knows who takes penalties. When Giles Coke first arrived earlier in the season, Richie Barker described him as a complex character. Many people now know why the gaffer referred to him as a complex character - the video clip of the incident has been viewed over a million times on YouTube, god knows how many hits other sites have received from football fans across the planet keen to see the incident. They say there's no such thing as bad publicity, but when its free publicity then the club will take it. Website hits this week have outstripped the promotion hits count, it's even higher than the years old 'Robbie the Bobbie' fighting mascot story.
Following last weeks game, Richie Barker commented on any suggestion of sending Coke back to Hillsborough, and quickly dismissed it. Any midfield of Steven Schumacher, Peter Sweeney and Giles Coke is worth keeping hold of. You know what your going to get from it. Add David Worrall to the equation and you begin to see it coming. A fit again David Worrall adds pace, trickery and the odd goal or two - though he should have bagged a hat trick himself last weekend.
Looking at the previous history of the two clubs and the previous 56 games - Bury hold a large lions share of victories. In the previous ten meetings, only three have been won by the home side. Any talk of league positions, relegation scraps, play off pushes - forget them all - this is a derby game, form goes out of the window and absolutely anything can happen - and usually does.
The atmosphere is taken care of and boxed off. Dale should get their numbers up with the appointment of John Coleman. His achievements at Accrington Stanley are immense. He's certainly never be forgotten at the Crown Ground. Accrington Stanley will be a very different club without Mr. Coleman and Mr. Bell involved.
Bury are now 13 points adrift of the seasons target of 50 points. Richie Barker set the target before the first game of the season. Five wins will reach and overtake that target. Tenth in League One, four places under the play offs but quite a points difference to achieve a play off position. Nobody is even thinking of relegation at Gigg Lane. Survival in League One was much talked about over the summer and the early stages of the season - its hardly mentioned now, now all people are talking about is how far we can go, how far can we take this.....
Steven Schumacher has trained all week despite the knock to the knee during the Yeovil game. Its the only injury concern that Richie Barker has. Shaun Harrad is back in full training following his sickness. last week the Shakers had a strong bench for the Yeovil game, this weekend it promises to be just as strong - maybe even stronger. Some players may even be disappointed to miss out completely - such is the competition for places now.
Should Efe Sodje be selected to play on Saturday, then he will chalk up his 499th league appearance. Sodje could finish the weekend just one game short of his personal target. Steps are being taken to mark his 500th league game and Sodje himself will be busy digging out his special 500 bandana for the next home game with Hartlepool next weekend.
Last weekend's game with Yeovil Town also brought another milestone, and this one slipped under the radar until after the game. Andy Bishop made his 200th league appearance at the weekend, though he's still asking almost on a weekly basis - how many goals did Craig Madden score? Has he set himself a new target?
Monday morning bragging rights are at stake. Local rivalry ramped up a notch or three. We know its going to be noisy, maybe even a little fraught at times. It's a derby game, forget form, forget league positions, anything can happen - and most probably will..... |

Bucking trends at relegation-threatened Rochdale will be crucial if new manager John Coleman is to successfully steer the Spotland club away from League One's drop zone. So Dale fans will have been cheered to see the new boss start as he means to go on yesterday when he was unveiled to the press corps.
Asked to brandish a club scarf for the obligatory 'new manager' photographs, Coleman amiably refused.
"You have to earn the right to wave the club's colours about like that," he declared.
After 13 years sporting Accrington red, it was enough that Coleman should don his new blue Rochdale tracksuit. The scarf was a prop too far for the 49-year-old on his first day in the job, though his resistance will undoubtedly be tested should he plot a path to safety in Dale's remaining 19 fixtures. And, having waited so long to manage at this level, Coleman and assistant boss Jimmy Bell will not give up League One status without a fight.
"Every game we play now is going to be vital and I'm not scared of talking about relegation - that's what is on everybody's mind and there is no point hiding from the fact and banning the word," said Coleman. "We are in a scrap and we've got to be prepared to roll our sleeves up and have a go."
Despite his long association with Accrington, the challenge of keeping Dale in the third tier, and of testing himself at the highest level of management, proved too much to resist when Spotland chairman Chris Dunphy came calling.
"It's a big wrench when you've been at a place for such a long time and it wasn't a decision I took lightly. Obviously, we know a lot about Rochdale from playing against them over the years, we've seen the success they've had and how well the club is run and we've spoken to people in the game and done our homework, as I'm sure the chairman has done his homework on us.
"Speaking to one of the recently departed managers, Steve Eyre, he had nothing but good things to say about the club, so you know you are going into a place where you will be given an opportunity. So as much as it was a wrench to leave Accrington, we had to let our heads rule our hearts and go with what we think is best at this time in our careers."
Coleman's number two, Bell, insisted any long-term planning would be put on hold until League One status was preserved.
"Our main aim is to keep the club up," he said. "We want to manage as high as we can and that's why we have come here.
"It's a big test for us. We don't want to be going back to League Two, so we'll give 100 per cent to keep this club where it is and reassess in the summer."
