25 year old Peter Sweeney arrived at Gigg Lane on 29 June 2010 after being released by Grimsby Town on the same day. Glasgow born Peter started his career south of the Border at Millwall and made his debut for the Lions in 2002 in a 3-0 win over Stockport County, though he was a used sub with just two minutes of experience behind him. His full debut came the following February when he started at the New Den in 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the Championship. His Millwall career went onto new heights though the following season as part of the team that went to the FA Cup Final. Defeat to Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium though brought UEFA Cup Football to Millwall the following season. Unfortunately it lasted only for the first round and elimination.
During his time in London, Peter collected six Scotland U21 caps. He moved further North soon after and signed for Stoke City, with a fee of £250,000 changing hands. Injury though curtailed his Potteries career in a pre-season game and he joined Yeovil Town in January 2007 on loan, but returned to Stoke at the end of March at his own request. A further loan move to Walsall for a short spell came and went before he move to Leeds United on a 2 and a half year deal. He failed to establish himself at Elland Road and following a change in manager, was soon out on loan again, this time to Grimsby Town. That move became permanent in July 2009, though his full season with the Mariners was to end in failure and relegation to the Blue Square Premiership. Peter had expressed his desire to stay in League Football and decided to join the Shakers after only one meeting with then manager Alan Knill.
2010/11 proved to be frustrating for Peter as an injury early in the season saw him lose his place in the side. The form shown by others kept 'Sweens' mostly on the bench for the remainder of the campaign, though he was back in the side due to suspensions as the Shakers secured promotion.
