Liverpool born Steven Schumacher began his career at Premiership Everton's academy, and was captain of the England under 19 squad whilst playing for the Youth Team at Goodison Park. The 26 year old central midfield player was unable to break into the Toffee's first team and he left Goodison on loan joining Carlisle United, where he scored his first career goal against Huddersfield Town in the LDV Vans Trophy, and then quickly followed by Oldham Athletic. Everton released him at the end of the 2003/04 season without making any appearances for their first team. He moved to then League One side Bradford City in July 2004 on a free transfer and enjoyed a successful three year spell at Valley Parade, however a change of heart by then manager Stuart McCall saw him being released come the end of the season.
After making 130 appearances and scoring 15 goals for the Bantams, he again found himself surplus to requirements in Yorkshire and joined Crewe Alexandra in May 2007. Whilst at Gresty Road he made another 81 appearances and scored eight goals for the Railwaymen. His last season at Gresty Roadwas a frustrating one for Steven with a series of injuries hampering his progress. Come the end of the season though, and with a change in management at Crewe, Steven found himself without a club after being released by Dario Gradi and his three year spell with Alexandra came to an end. A move to Gigg Lane was confirmed on 09 July 2010 when he put pen to paper on a two year contract with the Shakers. Steven is described as being comfortable in a holding role though can easily adapt to an attacking role.
Steven was also named club captain before the first game of last season and thrilled many supporters with his stunning long range goals from all angles. His goal v Shrewsbury Town at the Greenhous Meadow was also named as the clubs goal of the season and his final duty of last season was to lift the npower League Two runners up Trophy in front of a large crowd following an open top bus tour of the town centre.
