Chris O'Grady and Craig Davies fired the goals as Latics' reserves saw off near neighbours Bury at Boundary Park.

Both players were included as a fitness-building exercise and responded with excellent performances before being substituted on the hour.

O'Grady got the ball rolling with a resounding finish from the edge of the box, and Davies won it with a powerful volley just moments after the Shakers' Paul Pizzica had levelled.

The victory was the reserves' second in as many games at Boundary Park following the 3-2 win over Manchester City last month.

Latics started the game brightly and would have gone in front after just three minutes had a stretching Cameron Belford not got a hand to Davies' angled effort.

Glynn Hurst hit back with a header which drew a useful save from Greg Fleming, but it was Athletic who were generating the better chances.

Ex-Bury man Dale Stephens curled a free-kick just wide on 24 minutes and Davies rattled the crossbar with a lob from an acute angle just before the half hour.

The hosts had their reward when Kieran Lee found O'Grady, who backed off his marker to track the flight of the ball before arrowing a thumping shot beyond a startled Belford.

Davies perhaps should have added a second when he evaded multiple Bury defenders only to shoot across goal and wide from close range.

And Mike Sheron's side hit back just four minutes into the second half when Pizzica latched onto a through-ball down the left and lifted the ball over Fleming from six yards.

Stefan Stam covered enough ground to get back and hack the ball away from danger, but the linesman correctly ruled that Pizzica's effort had already crossed the goal-line.

But there was another twist as Davies showed off his finishing ability to re-establish a one-goal lead just a minute later.

One of the two unnamed trialists on show crossed from the right, and Davies lost his marker at the front post and measured a neat volley into the corner of Belford's goal.

The striker was causing the Shakers' defence plenty of problems, and was unlucky to see an effort cleared off the line following more neat work up front.

At the other end, Greg Fleming had to be in fine form to prevent an equaliser, palming away Pizzaca's header when the striker looked odds-on to score from close range.

Watching Bury boss Alan Knill was presented with a moment of concern when first-team squad member Ryan Cresswell was stretchered from the field 17 minutes from the end.

Play was held up for around five minutes while medical staff from both sides treated the defender, who was hurt as he challenged to meet an aerial ball into the box.

Sub Ryan Brooke had the best of the chances in the closing stages, heading Djeny Bembo-Leta's cross over as the second string wrapped up another home win.

Lee Duxbury's side are in action again next Wednesday (September 24, KO 7pm), when they face Stockport County at Boundary Park.
