A game played in driving rain and with temperatures dropping, the league leaders set about the visitors from York City. The opening exchanges brought some crisp passing from both sides and with both teams testing each other's defenses; it was the visitors who claimed the opening goal with their first decent ball into the box.

First blood went to the visitors when a hopeful long ball forward was brilliantly brought down by York's Adam Boyes. His first touch took it over one defender before hitting the sweetest of right foot volleys from the edge of the box to find the back of the net.Keeper Mike Smith saw nothing of the ball as it flashed by him into the bottom corner.

Goal:  Bury 0 York City 1 (Boyes 7)

Bury's game stepped up minutes later when a succession of corners brought some last gasp defending from York, including one good punch clear from York keeper Jonathan McDonald.York produced another good half chance on 18 minutes when Mat Johnson charged at the touch line with the ball firmly under his control, his ball back into the danger area though went straight to Mike Smith who collected at the near post.

Bury's Chris Mason was presented with half a chance on 22 minutes when a high looping delivery from Ryan Hall dropped just in front of the Bury striker, but the visiting keeper was quick to react and managed to collect the ball from the first bounce.Moments later, a good run from Jack Dorney down the left hand side saw him drop the ball to Hall just inside the box, but his fierce drive flew high over the crossbar.

Luke Holmes took the ball into the box on 28 minutes with a defender in tow, but the visitors keeper flew off his line and slid in to clear the ball taking down both striker and defender, though the worst to suffer from the challenge was the keeper himself with both Bury's and York's physio's on the field treating York players. Both quickly recovered to continue the game.

Bury's best chance to get back in the game came on 31 minutes when Kevin Fields headed the ball into the six yard box, Jack Dorney leapt for the ball and got his header on target but keeper McDonald somehow managed to push the ball out for a corner. From the corner, a high foot on Ryan Hall on the edge of the box presented a free kick to the young shakers.Dorney's drive was brilliantly tipped out for a corner by the keeper.Edmonson-Rouse's delivery from the second corner found the head of Ryan Hall, but his goal bound header was cleared from the line by the visiting defence.

A flowing Bury move from the back brought a free kick for the Shakers on 40 minutes when an excellent ball found Kevin Fields on the edge of the box, his first time shot though was thwarted by a stern challenge from behind. The resulting free kick saw Ryan Hall fire at goal and again, keeper McDonald was quick to react and made a good save diving at the far post to collect the ball.

A foul on Jack Dorney on 43 minutes brought another free kick for Bury, this time on the far side of the York box.A short pass to Ryan Hall though didn't quite work out as the Bury midfielder slammed the ball into the back of the Manchester Road End.

Half Time:  Bury Youth 0 York City Youth 1

The second half got underway as the first half finished, with Bury applying pressure on the visitors area, a good deep cross from Fields saw Edmondson-Rouse on the far stick head the ball out of play though he was under some pressure from a defender.

It was Edmondson-Rouse again on 52 minutes when he collected the ball in midfield, he took the ball forward a few paces before unleashing the powerful drive at goal that unfortunately lacked direction and flew into the back of the Cemetery End, though with two team mates in better positions to shoot, the chance went begging.

Moments later Hall brought another good save out of the York keeper with a powerful near post shot that McDonald tipped out for a corner.York won a corner on 55 minutes when Mat Johnson fired a powerful shot on goal, Dominic Taylor slid in to clear his effort out for a corner that was easily dealt with by the Bury defence.

Chris Mason had a golden opportunity on 57 minutes when a ball form the middle split the York defence in two, Mason charged and the keeper advanced to the edge of the box.McDonald just got the first touch in as Mason fired at goal, the ball cannoned off the keeper and flew to safety.

York then doubled their lead whena Luke Woodall free kick, just inside the Bury half, totally deceived Shakers keeper Mike Smith to loop over his head and into the back of the goal.Did he mean it or was it a total fluke!!!!His celebration though suggested that the right back had indeed gone for goal.Very much a 'Nayim v Seaman' effort.

Goal:  Bury Youth 0 York City Youth 2 (Woodall60)

Bury swiftly made a double change to keep themselves in the FA Youth Cup with Mallion and Mason both being replaced with Jermaine Steele and David Thompson coming into the game.  Nathan Tossum also replaced Jack Dorney with 72 minutes gone.

Ryan Hall received a yellow card on 75 minutes when York were awared a free kick just inside the Bury half, Hall showed his frustration by lashing the ball into the advertising hoardings to the obvious displeasure of the official.

York could have made it three on 77 minutes with a rare foray forward.  A surging run from Michael Emmerson saw his pass across the box just touched at goal by Boyes, though his effort lacked pace, it still needed to be saved by Mike Smith.

Bury did get the ball in the back of the net on 90 minutes through a Holmes strike, but an offside flag killed all hopes of a late Bury come back.

Finally, the official blew the full time whistle and the Shakers progress in this years FA Youth Cup came to a halt.
