Wigan Athletic 2 Bury 2 (2-4 on pens)

Posted on: Thu 26 Aug 2010

Two penalty saves from Christian Dibble put the Shakers through into the Semi Final, though some strange refereeing decisions certainly liven up a thrilling encounter in the this seasons Lancs. FA Professional Youth Cup Quarter Final at Wigan on Tuesday evening.

Last seasons beaten Finalists Bury took advantage on 17 minutes when good hold up play from Danny Hudson allowed Max Harrop to receive the ball.A swift and stunning pass found Adam Dawson on the right wing.He quickly cut inside to challenge the Wigan left back before whipping a dangerous cross into the area that was quickly turned into his own goal by a home defender.

Wigan hit back five minutes later when a striker beat the Bury defence before squaring the ball to an unmarked team-mate who tapped home into the empty Shakers goal.

Bury should have retaken the lead from the re-start.Good football from Wade Joyce found Liam Boswell and his attempted lob beat the home keeper, but was quickly cleared off the line by a covering defender.Joyce had another chance on the stroke of half time when a poor clearance was forced back at goal, but just drifted over the bar.

The final two minutes of the game came with both sides level, but a quick Bury free kick found Max Harrop, he ran in behind the Wigan defence taking on two defenders before playing in an excellent cross where Danny Hudson arrived to smash it into the roof of the net to make it Wigan 1 Bury 2.

Unbelievably in the final minute of normal time, the referee bizarrely awarded a penalty to the home side - from a Bury clearance that was clearly outside the area.Wigan took the opportunity and slammed the spot kick home forcing the game into penalties.

Christian Dibble saved the first Wigan effort, and Bury went onto score all four of their spot kicks with McGonigle, Harrop, Hudson and Dawson all finding the back of the net.Dibble put the young Shakers into the semi final by stopping the fourth Wigan penalty to the obvious enjoyment of his team-mates.
