Hallam had a successful spell with the Shakers at the tail end of 2013-14 after arriving on loan from Everton. During that loan spell he became the first Bury player to score a league hat-trick since August 1999, with three goals in the final game of the season against Portsmouth. During his first spell at Gigg Lane, he made eight appearances and scored five goals.
After his spell with the Shakers, Hallam returned to Goodison Park but was loaned out again, this time to Sheffield Wednesday at the start of last season, where he made four appearances before being recalled to Everton. Hallam returned to Bury on loan in November 2014 before the move was made a permanent one in the January transfer window after the Shakers paid an undisclosed fee for his services, with Hallam signing a three-year contract. After falling out of favour at Gigg Lane, Hallam joined League Two side Carlisle United and spent a large part of last season on loan at Brunton Park.
