Leon Barnett joined the Shakers over the summer after putting his signature on a two-year deal after he was released by Wigan Athletic at the end of last season. Leon brings a wealth of top-level experience to Gigg Lane having won promotion to the Premier League three times in his career. He started his football career at Luton Town and progressed through their youth system.
Barnett completed a move from Luton Town to Championship club West Bromwich Albion on 26th July 2007 for an initial fee of £2.5 million. He played a pivotal role in the West Brom side that won the 2007-08 Championship title, where he made 36 appearances during the season, scoring three times.
His next big move was on the 26th August 2010 when he joined Norwich City. On 10th December 2010 he penned a permanent three-and-a-half deal with the side for an undisclosed fee. In 2013, Barnett completed a one-month loan move to Championship club Cardiff City as a replacement for injured captain Mark Hudson. Leon formed a strong defensive partnership with Ben Turner as Cardiff went on to win the Championship title. His loan was extended until the end of the season, but he was later recalled by Norwich on 24th April 2013.
