A strong, powerful central defender, Birmingham born Nathan joined the Coventry City Youth system in 2009 and went on to make 52 appearances for the Sky Blues first team whilst at the Ricoh Arena. Towards the end of the 2012-13 season he joined League Two Northampton, playing just three games for the Cobblers, the play-off semi-finals and final at Wembley Stadium.
Upon returning to Coventry though he found himself surplus to requirements and despite having offers from other clubs, Nathan turned North and arrived at Gigg Lane prior to pre-season training signing a two-year deal with the Shakers. Although Nathan started the season in the first team, a change of management at Gigg Lane saw him fall down the pecking order. The drop down the order spurred Nathan in action and the turnaround was complete when David Flitcroft named him as club captain. Nathan was also named Player of the Season for the 2014-15 season after he played all but 45 minutes of the Shakers promotion winning campaign that season. His long run of games for the club came to an end towards the end of the season when he had surgery to fix damaged knee ligaments and missed the last ten games of the campaign.
