Keeper Rob Lainton is a product of the Bolton Wanderers youth system and progressed through the ranks at the Reebok under goalie coach Fred Barber. Rob was eventually handed a place in the Trotters first team squad and despite being named on the bench in the Premier League numerous times, he didn’t make any appearances for Bolton.
His release at the end of the 2012/13 season brought a move to Gigg Lane. Ironically under the coaching abilities of Fred Barber, who had also moved to Bury? At over six foot, Rob is a commanding unit between the sticks. Calm when called upon, Rob has yet to claim a permanent starting role at Gigg Lane but has proved to be a very capable keeper when called upon.
Rob was released by the Shakers at the end of the 2015/16 season, but made a surprising return by starting the Boxing Day game at Fleetwood Town after signing a short term deal to return to the Shakers first team.
