Midfielder Tom Soares joined the Shakers on non-contract terms soon after Kevin Blackwell’s arrival in September 2012. Tom started his career with Crystal Palace in 2003 and made 163 appearances for the Selhurt Park based outfit, scoring ten goals, before he secured a £1.25m move to Stoke City in September 2008. He made just 12 appearances for the Potters and joined Charlton Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday and Hibernian – all as loan moves - where he played a further combined total of 50 appearances and scored a further five goals.
Released by Stoke City at the end of the 2010-11 season, Tom arrived on non-contract terms but signed a short term deal in March to see him stay at Gigg Lane until the end of last season. The Shakers then perilous financial situation saw him, and 19 others, released by the club, but Tom accepted a new two-year deal with Bury following a successful takeover in the summer of 2013. A key player in the middle of any squad, Tom played a huge role in the Shakers promotion 2015 winning season and capped off a fine campaign by scoring the only goal of the game that claimed automatic promotion at Tranmere Rovers on a dramatic last day of the season. Tom enjoyed a solid 2015-16 season and chipped in with his usual handful of goals during the campaign.
