Match Report: Bury 1-1 Newport County

23 October 2018

The Shakers had to settle for a point against Michael Flynn’s Newport County side, as they managed to pull a goal back in the second-half to snatch a point in a 1-1 draw. The Bury camp will have felt aggrieved after dominating large spells of the game.

Ryan Lowe named an unchanged starting eleven after his side’s impressive 4-0 demolition of Notts County on Saturday.

The Shakers started off on the front foot, with Danny Mayor again driving at the defence, causing problems for the visitors. His best chance came 7 minutes into the contest, as his effort was deflected for a corner.

20 minutes in, the hosts were causing problems from corners, with a string in quick succession. Danny Mayor was the man to have the effort again, as the best chance to take the lead was fashioned to the number 10, but his effort was deflected behind for another corner.

Nicky Maynard maintained his impressive goalscoring start for the Shakers. Neil Danns fired a ball into Maynard, who spun beyond Newport skipper Mickey Demetriou superbly. The forward then powered towards goal, slipping the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area, beating Day at his near post, putting the Shakers a goal to the good 24 minutes in.

The hosts were starting to control the game, as Michael Flynn’s side couldn’t handle the mazy Danny Mayor runs, and quick link up-play between the forwards. Telford went close after some pinball inside the area, but the ball was blocked by a Newport defender. The Bury players felt a hand was involved, but the referee waved away the protests for a penalty.

David Pipe was pivotal in keeping the visitors just the goal behind. Dom Telford smartly flicked a ball over the top for Nicky Adams, who whipped a dangerous delivery into the middle, aiming for Maynard. The goalscorer wasn’t far from adding a second to his tally for the evening, but it took a brilliant defensive header from Pipe to flick the ball beyond Maynard.

The Shakers looked comfortable as the half went on, controlling the ball in the midfield, and looking threatening when going forward. Ryan Lowe’s side were also defensively solid, preventing the visitors from testing Joe Murphy, as the goal lead looked more than safe going into the final minutes of the half.

HALF-TIME: Bury 1-0 Newport County

The Shakers kicked off the second half on the back foot, with the visitors looking to get back into the match. Newport struggled to cause any problems for the hosts, who looked dangerous on the break. Chris Stokes released Danny Mayor, who was on yet another menacing forward run. He slipped the ball into Maynard, who couldn’t double his tally, as his effort from the edge of the area was dragged just wide.

11 minutes into the second period, the visitors were level, completely against the run of play. Substitute Antoine Semenyo found himself with space down the left, his brilliant delivery evaded the Bury back line, allowing Matt to jab the ball beyond Murphy for his 9th of the season.

Maynard should have had his second of the evening on the hour mark. Danny Mayor again exhibiting his creative flair from the edge of the box, curling the ball into the path of Maynard. The forward was first to the ball on the 6-yard line. It looked sure that the Shakers would retake the lead, but Joe Day’s heroics in the opposition goal kept the scores level at 1-1.

The game was finally coming to life, Newport looked to take the lead themselves, playing Semenyo in behind. Will Aimson was alert to the danger, getting across expertly to prevent the forward getting one-on-one with Joe Murphy.

Callum McFadzean continued to show why he is such a threat when he’s on the ball in attacking positions down the left. He played a trademark low ball across the box, beating multiple defenders on the way. However, it was the last man that stopped Telford having a glorious chance 8-yards from goal.

Day was on hand again to keep the scores level. Danny Mayor battled his way beyond the defence, before firing a shot in from a tight angle. The Newport shot-stopper was across sharply to keep the ball out at his near post.

With little over 10 minutes remaining, Danny Mayor almost has his side ahead after a remarkable solo effort. Gliding past the Newport County players as if they were not even there, he found himself on the left-hand side of the box. He released a powerful effort, but Day was equal to it, palming the ball out. It was almost into the path of Nicky Maynard, but the Shakers' forward tripped a County defender, ending the attack.

The Shakers looked to be the side in the better position to snatch all 3 points. Attacking the Newport backline time and time again. A defence-splitting ball was into the path of Maynard, who subsequently rounded Day in the visiting goal. Unfortunately, he took it too wide, giving himself too tight an angle to squeeze the ball in as he hit the side netting.

Plenty of late pressure from the hosts couldn’t help them break down a resolute Newport County side. Nicky Maynard had one or two good chances to deliver all 3 points for the Shakers. It took inspired ‘keeping in the County goal to keep the scores level, as Day pulled off a string of incredible saves.
