Match Report: Bury 4-0 Notts County

20 October 2018

The Shakers registered their second 4-0 win of the season as they dominated Notts County at the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane.

Nicky Maynard, Dom Telford, Jay O’Shea, and Nicky Adams helped secure a win for Ryan Lowe’s side, as he made it one win each with Harry Kewell after he got the better of the Shakers when in charge of Crawley Town earlier in the season.

Ryan Lowe named one change to his starting eleven. Following his goalscoring exploits in midweek, Dom Telford was given the nod ahead of Chris Dagnall, who had to settle for a place on the bench. He was joined by scholar Joe Adams, who impressed enough against Leicester City U21’s to earn his place amongst the other substitutes.

Danny Mayor should have had the Shakers ahead in the opening 10 minutes. Receiving the ball down the left, the elusive forward drifted past four defenders with ease. It opened up perfectly for the number ten. However, he delayed his shot, allowing a Notts County player to get across and block the effort.

Nicky Maynard continued his impressive scoring streak, making it four goals in the last three games for the Shakers! Danny Mayor, Neil Danns, and Callum McFadzean linked up down the left. The latter whipped a dangerous ball low across the 6-yard box, evading two outstretched defenders on it’s path to Maynard towards the back stick, who poked the ball home.

The Shakers had a second before the clock had hit twenty minutes! Ryan Lowe’s side were reaping the rewards for a dominant start to the fixture. Dom Telford showed his poachers’ instincts as he added to his midweek double. Mayor attempted to beat Fitzsimons with a cheeky backheel; the effort deflected to Maynard who knocked the ball into the path of Telford who couldn’t miss as he found himself with an open net from two yards.

Jay O’Shea was pulling the strings from his deeper role again, this time picking out Maynard with a superb dinked ball over the top of the defence. Maynard then looked to find Telford in the middle, but Turley was on hand to clear the ball.

The hosts appealed for a penalty on the half-hour mark. Dom Telford displayed his expert touch as he brought a long ball down on his chest. He slipped the ball through to Maynard who felt he was hit in the face by a Notts County defender, he went down, but the referee didn’t see anything wrong.

Elliott Hewitt will have felt fortunate to remain on the pitch after the opening 35 minutes had been played.

Danny Mayor was his usual handful for defenders, especially Hewitt. The Notts County number 4 had been booked for a challenge on Mayor moments before committing a similar offence.

Danny Mayor was in first gear this afternoon, continuing to harass the back line of Notts County. This time, he drove forward with the ball, sprinting beyond three defenders. He found Maynard who had McFadzean on the overlap, he decided to go alone and just couldn’t curl the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area.

HALF-TIME: Bury 2-0 Notts County

Notts County continued to struggle in front of goal in the opening exchanges of the second half. The visitors were restricted to long-range efforts; Cedric Evina came closest, but his effort was off target, giving Murphy nothing to do.

The Shakers continued to keep their visitors penned in at the back through plenty of pressure with the ball, and brilliant pressing without. A rare County attack saw Enzio Boldewijn outmuscle Dom Telford, and battle beyond Callum McFadzean. The attacker then struck the ball from 25 yards, but could only hit his effort straight at Joe Murphy, who held onto the ball with ease.

With only sixty-five minutes on the clock, the Shakers had a third, making it 3-0! Neil Danns was on his toes, reacting quickly to a loose ball, the skipper then slipped Telford in behind who was taken down by Tootle, forcing referee Carl Boyeson to point to the spot. Jay O’Shea stepped up to take the spot-kick, firing the ball into the bottom left-hand corner as Fitzsimons didn’t even move!

Ryan Lowe wasn’t letting his side settle with a 3-goal lead. His side continued to push forward in their numbers. Dom Telford slipped Neil Danns the ball on the edge of the box to the right-hand side, Danns looked to fire the ball across Fitzsimons in the County goal. Unfortunately, the skipper’s effort wasn’t far enough in the corner, and the visiting ‘keeper was down on the ball quickly.

Adam Thompson wasn’t far off making it four for the Shakers. Nicky Adams took a short free-kick from the right into Stokes. Stoked then dinked a ball into the box and Thompson’s flick-on was on target, forcing Fitzsimons into a save low to his right.

Harry Kewell’s side looked to push the hosts late on; however, they failed to fashion any clear-cut chances as the clock indicated less than 10 minutes remaining.

With 2 minutes remaining, the Shakers made it four thanks to vice-captain Nicky Adams and his superb solo effort! Cutting in from the right, Nicky Adams took the ball beyond multiple defenders, before his ferocious strike cannoned off the far post from 25 yards and into the back of the net.

A wonderful individual goal from Nicky Adams sealed a comfortable performance perfectly. The Shakers got their rewards for brilliant attacking play, as they hit Notts County for four without reply. The defence were excellent also, limiting the visitors to half chances, giving ‘keeper Joe Murphy next to nothing to do this afternoon.
