Match Report: Bury 0 - Carlisle United 1

22 September 2018

The 10 men of Carlisle United became the first team to leave the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane with all three points this season, thanks to a second half goal from Richie Bennett.

Byron Moore kept his place in an unchanged starting line-up after an impressive brace last time out. He saw the Shakers to a 2-1 victory away at Swindon Town, ending a run of 34 away games without a win.

Bury got off to a quick start, as Danny Mayor and Byron Moore charged at the defence, beating players with skill early on, however both were unable to test Adam Collin or set up a team mate as the Carlisle defence stood strong in the opening exchanges.

Both sides struggled to create any notable chances early on, as both Ryan Lowe's and John Sheridan's men attempted to get accustomed to the extremely slippery surface on a rather wet afternoon at the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane.

The Shakers were the more threatening side in the opening quarter, with Nicky Adams causing problems down the right, drawing fouls from the visitors, with Macauley Gillesphey picking up an early booking for tripping Nicky Adams.

Adams almost fired the Shakers ahead in spectacular fashion as the half hour mark was approaching! Stokes looked to thread Dagnall in, and the deflected pass almost found the hard working forward as the clearance was only as far as former Carlisle United man Adams. He struck the ball superbly from outside the area, with plenty of venom, however the ball cannoned off the crossbar and away to safety.

Ryan Lowe's side were not stopping. They came forward again through Danny Mayor, however his attempted one-two with Dagnall didn't come off as the game remained level.

The slippery surface came into action not long after the half hour mark. O'Shea's long ball forward to Moore looked to be easy to deal with for Anthony Gerrard, however his slip gave Moore the chance to bring the ball down, however Carlisle covered Gerrard well and stopped the Bury man causing any problems.

Moore was involved again straight away, his smart reverse ball found Will Aimson in the box, the centre half attempted to pick skipper Neil Danns out in the middle, but the pass couldn't quite make it to the midfielder as Carlisle cleared another Bury attack.

Chris Dagnall's expert touch down the left almost helped the Shakers break the deadlock, after he brought the ball down. It was switched to Nicky Adams, Adam Collin got a vital fist to the cross from the Bury vice-captain as Danny Mayor couldn't fashion a chance on the follow-up.

John Sheridan's men came close to taking the lead just before half time as former Shaker Hallam Hope forced his way in behind down the right, he powered a ball into the box looking for Bennett but the impressive Will Aimson got a foot to the ball first and managed to clear the ball.

HALF TIME: Bury 0-0 Carlisle United

Carlisle began the second half the brighter of the two teams. After having some joy down the left, they actually took the lead following a corner from the right. Devitt whipped the ball in, finding Gillesphey who flicked the ball on. Richie Bennett was found as he powered the ball into the back of the net, despite the best efforts of Joe Murphy and Nicky Adams.

Ryan Lowe's men reacted positively to falling behind as vice-captain Nicky Adams almost had his side level. He found himself in plenty of space deep in the box following a cross. He curled an effort towards the far bottom corner, however he just couldn't find his target as Adam Collin had a goal kick in the Carlisle goal.

Adams continued to cause problems down the right, as Bury continued their hunt for an equaliser. After using some great skill to create the space down the right, he whipped the ball in looking for Dagnall. Unfortunately, Carlisle managed to clear their lines just in time.

Carlisle were struggling to contain Nicky Adams, as he continued to create chance after chance with brilliant balls into the box. Adam Thompson, Chris Dagnall and second half substitute Gold Omotayo were on the end of the deliveries, but they just couldn't do enough to get the Shakers back on level terms.

Jermaine Beckford made a long-awaited return to the pitch, as he replaced the tireless Chris Dagnall with 13 minutes to go. It's Beckford's first appearance since the 28th of October last year, following a lengthy lay-off.

Carlisle United 'keeper Adam Collin was called into action again, as Callum Styles went close with a free kick from 25 yards out. Collin dived to his left and was equal to the strike.

The Shakers' chances of getting a late equaliser to maintain their unbeaten home record were aided by the dismissal of Jerry Yates. The Carlisle player was given his marching orders for an off-the-ball incident, following referee Mark Heywood talking to his makeshift assistant Ken Haycock.

Ryan Lowe's side came close to drawing level through Jermaine Beckford. The forward was found on the penalty spot, but he couldn't force his effort through a sea of purple shirts, with the visitors hanging on to their goal advantage.

The Shakers almost drew level in stoppage time. A dangerous corner from the right found Adam Thompson at the front post, however the defender could not power his header on target, as his attempt was just wide of the post.

Despite plenty of late pressure, the Shakers couldn't use their man advantage and draw level. Carlisle United travel home with the 3 points, thanks to Richie Bennett scoring the only goal of the game.
