I prefer a difficult start

20 July 2012

Joe Skarz looking forward to getting the season up and running

‘It’s good to be back after a good break, I think we all needed it, but we've been back in for two weeks now and we are all getting sharper and fitter every day.  Now we are doing less running and more work with a football.  It’s still hard work but it has been good.

Last season was a really long season for all of us, especially for those of us that played the majority of the games.  We had some tough times through the season and it took a lot out of the lads.  We’ve all had a good break and it looks like everyone has followed the programmes that the gaffer gave us before we finished.  Everyone is back feeling fresh and just looking forward to the games starting next week.

I thought I did ok last season, though I was a little disappointed at times.  As a team we let in too many goals last season.  I’m still only 23 and gaining experience every day.  That experience is vital, you learn from your mistakes and hopefully we can be more consistent for the new season.  We played well at times last season, now we need to be more consistent at that.

It’s down to focus and strength.  When you play that many games, its train and play.  When you’re losing games, you don’t feel as fresh as you do when winning.  We’ve all been working hard over pre-season and I’ve worked hard on strength in my legs.  We’ve all got our own individual programme from the gaffer, its set for our own needs.

Last season maybe there was a bit of tired mentally, hopefully this season we can push on.  Also you have to remember that we are playing against better player’s week in week out.  Sometimes you are going to make a mistake and it ends up in the back of the net.  We have to eradicate that and be more consistent.

I feel stronger; I can feel my own body.  I’ve just turned 23 and I think I am nearly fully developed now.  I’m growing into my body a lot more and I know what my body needs with food and supplements.  The older you get the more you know what your body needs and what you need to do.

We've been training really hard.  The gaffer has put on some really good sessions, but they've been really hard.  They’ve been mixed; on Thursday morning it was hill running at Heaton Park – which was tough.  None of us enjoys that but it has to be done.  Now we just want to get the games going, we want the team to jell; get to know how we all play, how the new boys play and just looking forward to getting going.

The new lads have slotted in really well.  I think that this is one of the things that the gaffer looks for, they have to fit into the team spirit and the dressing room.  Marcus Marshall, Lateef and Trevor are all young lads and then Adam Lockwood has that championship experience with him.  They have settled in really well and the team spirit is just like it always is here at Bury – just brilliant.

We have some really good experienced defenders now with Sodje and Lockey, they are both passing their experience onto the younger lads.

We've got another difficult start to the season, and to be honest, I think I would probably prefer a difficult start rather than a start where we are expected to win games.  I don’t know why, but we proved last season that we seem to play better against the bigger teams, but the league this season is going to be really tight, you can’t really pick out a weak team.’
