Richie barker’s comments following Saturdays 6-1 win at Radcliffe Borough
“A 6-1 win means absolutely nothing, but the run out for the lads was exactly what we were looking for. I thought the attitude shown by all 22 of them was excellent; they did exactly what I asked them to do. We didn’t even mention winning the game or scoring goals like that.
They worked as hard as they could off the ball by pressing the game, and then when you do get the ball, go and pass it. To be fair to them, they did exactly that. The result and the goals are a bit of a bonus really.
We’ve done nothing on tactics apart from 20 minutes of 11 v 11 on Tuesday or Wednesday. The game was a little bit alien to them with regards to what we have been doing. We grew into the game pretty well.
It’s pleasing for me that all the strikers got at least a goal each, but I am even more pleased for them because as a striker, you cannot wait to get off the mark. When it comes down to me picking a team at the start of the season, they will all come back to me and tell me exactly how many goals they have scored. All four of them got one today, including a wide player as well.
It was also good to see Marcus Marshall get a goal with his first touch, he grew into the game, but it was a well worked goal. Peter Sweeney put Liam Boswell in and he picked out a good pass and I am sure it will do him good as well to get that first goal for the club.
Both Marcus and Adam Lockwood have both settled in very well. Adam gets all the respect for what he has done in his career before arriving with us and his record speaks for itself. Marcus is just a likeable character anyway and because we have a squad of that age, with him being a similar age, he fits in pretty well as well.
We also played a game on Friday against Celtic U21’s and we saw what we needed to see from the trialist’s and young players. Celtic were a very good side and it started extremely difficult for us because we were a bit of a mix and match to start with three trialists, a couple of apprentices’ and some younger pro’s as well.
It was a mix and match because that squad is not together on a daily basis at the moment. It was good and we also had an eye on five of them, because they played on Friday and then played some part in the game at Radcliffe on Saturday.
It was a good experience for people like Dalton McLaughlin, Jordan Melia, Liam Boswell as well as Max Harrop and Luke McCarthy. I got a few on one or two of the trialist’s. They did ok but I have to be looking at players that will make this team and this squad better. There are a lot of people out there that are good players who probably just are not what we have got.
There is no point in bringing people in who are the same as we have got, I want players that are going to be better, but we will keep looking. We are always looking and we will have one or two in throughout the next month, but we are getting close to one or two answers that’s for certain.”
