Shakers into next round after penalty shoot out success

Rochdale 1 Bury 1 (Bury win 5-4 on penalties)

Bury recorded their first win of the season with a local derby victory away at Rochdale in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Rochdale were the better side in the first half, taking the lead after 18 minutes with a sweetly-struck effort for Ashley Grimes.

But Bury came back fighting in the second and were rewarded for their persistence with a penalty for Steven Schumacher – the initial spot kick was saved by Ben Smith, but the Bury captain tucked away the rebound.

As the match ended in a draw, it went straight to penalties. Bury kept their nerve, scoring all five, while Rochdale’s Phil Edwards saw his penalty saved by Trevor Carson.

Bury’s winning spot kick came from Adam Lockwood, who buried the ball in the top corner.

While the Shakers might have felt a sense of history repeating itself from conceding early on Saturday, it was a spritely start for the home side as Ray

Putterill curled a shot against the crossbar after 40 seconds of play.

GOAL! Rochdale took the lead on 18 minutes, with a stylish effort for Ashley Grimes. Left with time on the edge of the box to tee up his shot, his sweetly-stuck effort passed Trevor Carson and dropped into the bottom corner.

Bury’s first shot on target arrived on 34 minutes, courtesy of a low effort from Tom Hopper on the edge of the box. While it had the pace behind it, Ben Smith in the Rochdale net had it covered.

Six minutes of added time created a notable chance for both sides - first Grimes was inches from claiming his second of the night, but Carson denied him at the near post, before a cross from Marcus Marshall found the head of Andy Bishop in front of goal, but he headed wide.

Hopper tried his luck from distance on 50 minutes, only to see his effort deflected wide of the post for a Bury corner. Swirled into the box from the right, the ball pinged around the box before the referee saw a handball from Pearson and awarded a penalty to Bury.

GOAL! Steven Schumacher stepped up to take the spot kick and, after seeing his first effort saved by Smith, calmly slotted away the rebound.

A silly tackle on the edge of the box saw Bury awarded a free kick in Schumacher’s territory, but instead of taking the kick himself, he teed up the ball for David Healy who blasted well over the bar.

Three dangerous crosses were supplied in quick succession from Marshall on 64 minutes, but each time, there was no Bury presence in the Rochdale box to finish them off.

Craig Curran saw red on 79 minutes after a late tackle on Carson, who had the ball in his hands following a close range effort, and the referee deemed the challenge severe enough for a straight red card.

A neat forward move from the Shakers on 89 minutes resulted with the ball at Peter Sweeney’s feet, but his looping effort was met by Smith at the near post.

Three minutes of added time saw Sweeney with another chance to bag the winner for Bury, but he curled a free kick from the edge of the box wide of the post.

As added time drew to a close, the match went on to be decided by penalties.
