Second half goal blitz see's shakers win at Edgeley Park
Stockport County v Bury FC – Maurice Dickson reporting from Edgeley Park
Ben Futcher’s Development Squad made the short trip down to Edgeley Park to face Stockport County and fielded no less than five triallists in their starting eleven. Gary Borrowdale (ex-QPR), Ben Parker (ex-Leeds), Bryan Hughes (ex-Birmingham City), Mahrez Bettache (ex-Fulham) and Troy Hewitt (currently still under contract with QPR) all lined up in the Shakers yellow away kit and under the watchful eye of Shakers boss Kevin Blackwell who was sat up in the stands.
Midfield Bryan Hughes almost opened the scoring for Bury on 16 minutes when his stinging drive following an uncleared corner caught County ‘keeper Dane Smith by surprise but the stopper grabbed the ball at the second attempt.
On 19 minutes County were forced into a change after O’Donnell suffered a nasty cut above the eye and was replaced by Joe Connor and within seconds they could have taken the lead following good work by Windsor down the left he found Sam Sheridan but his half volley flew narrowly over the bar.
County were finding a bit of space and on 26 minutes following some slick passing between Holden and Brownhill the latter fired over a great cross which just eluded Danny Rowe.
It was the Shakers turn to have the next few attempts on County’s goal when first Bryan Hughes fired over a free kick from the edge of the box after Lateef Elford-Alliyu was brought down by the keeper who was lucky to escape a yellow never mind a red card. Then, within seconds, Lateef had a blistering shot palmed away after when he cut in along the by-line after a great pass from Gary Borrowdale down the left. The resulting corner wasn’t cleared and fell to Andrai Jones but the Shakers skipper blazed over from 12 yards.
Craig Jones missed a glorious chance when put through one on one with the County ‘keeper but Smith did really well to block his effort but within sixty seconds, following a wonderful pass by the evergreen Efe Sodje on one of his marauding runs forward, the young Welshman was, again, through one on one with Smith but this time he made no mistake burying the chance in the bottom corner.
GOAL: Stockport Co 0 – 1 Bury FC (Craig Jones 38 minutes)
On 42 Shane Byrne could have doubled Bury’s lead but his 30 yard effort was well held by Smith and two minutes later the County custodian did well to block a goal-bound effort from Lateef.
Half-time Stockport Co 0 – 1 Bury FC
Stockport SUB: Sheridan off. Collins on. (46 minutes)
After Bury had missed out on a couple of half chances it was County who came closest to levelling the scores on 50 minutes when Tom Collins outpaced the Bury defence and slipped the ball past Belford and across the goal line but the onrushing Graham could only poke the ball narrowly wide of the Shakers net.
On 56 minutes Andrai Jones tried his luck from 30 yards after a good pass from Shane Byrne but his shot flew just over the County bar.
Stockport SUB: Connor off. Omoboye on (60 minutes)
Shane Byrne was the next Shaker to try his luck from distance but Dane Smith saved his effort on 65 minutes
Bury SUB: Sodje off. Melia on. (66 minutes)
County’s right-back Ben Say got the games first Yellow card on 68 minutes for a fairly hefty challenge on triallist Gary Borrowdale who was replaced by Luke McCarthy
Bury SUB: Borrowdale off. McCarthy on (69 minutes)
The Shakers doubled their lead in the 70th minute when Craig Jones bamboozled the County defence and fired in a shot which Smith failed to hold and the ball popped up kindly for triallist Tom Hewitt to head home from close range.
GOAL: Stockport Co 0 – 2 Bury FC (Hewitt 70 minutes)
Bury increased their lead three minutes later when Ben Parker’s ball into the box was met by Lateef Elford-Alliyu who headed home, again from close range.
GOAL: Stockport Co 0 – 3 Bury FC (Elford-Alliyu 73 minutes)
County pulled one back two minutes later when, from a corner, Brandon Windsor rose above the Bury defence to power home a header with Belford helpless.
GOAL: Stockport Co 1- 3 Bury FC (Windsor 75 minutes)
Jordan Melia went into Mr Astley’s notebook when he brought down Windsor in the 83rd minute with a clumsy tackle but the free kick was well saved by Cameron Belford.
The Shakers almost increased their lead when McCarthy’s excellent cross was met by Lateef but Smith just managed to push the ball away and they held on to their two goal advantage until the final whistle blew following three minutes of injury time had passed and took the points back home.
