Shakers bring in defender

4 October 2012

Wolves’ defender Matt Doherty joins on three month loan deal.

Kevin Blackwell has signed Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty on three month loan deal

Defender Matt Doherty's impressive form in pre-season friendlies for Bohemians against Wolves and Aston Villa went a long way to help earn a move to Wolves in August, 2010.

The full back/centre back caught the eye of Mick McCarthy and the Wolves coaching staff during the friendly played in July 2010 and a deal was eventually done with the club which also nurtured Stephen Ward.

Doherty signed a two-year-contract, with a further year in Wolves' favour, to make the move for an undisclosed fee.   Doherty turned out for Belvedere prior to joining Bohemians, and after almost 18 months spent largely playing reserve team football the Wolves friendly was his first appearance for Bohs first team.

Having previously had trials with several English clubs at a younger age, he then combined his football with working for his Dad's carpet and upholstery cleaning business.  Capped by the Republic of Ireland at various junior levels, Doherty went straight into the club's Development squad under coach Steve Weaver.

Having appeared as an unused substitute for four Barclays Premier League games, Doherty made his first team debut in the FA Cup Third Round draw with Doncaster in January, 2011.  Doherty also helped the Republic of Ireland qualify for the 2011 European Under-19 Championships, taking place in Romania in July.

Matt will take squad number 31 during his spell with the Shakers
