So Near - So Far
Bury 1 Carlisle United 1
Bury were seconds away from claiming their first win of the season against mid-table Carlisle, only to have their hearts broken in the dying seconds.
Leeds loanee Zac Thompson celebrated his debut by taking the lead for the Shakers with a well-taken low drive from the edge of the box late in the first half.
The Shakers continued to press and had a chance to double their lead and claim a deserved win through Tom Hopper with moments of the match remaining, but Joe Garner claimed a point for Carlisle with a close-range effort as the seconds ticked away.
Bury’s first chance arrived after six minutes, as Matt Doherty shot from the edge of the box, only to see his effort deflected away for a corner.
Debutant Dominic Poleon paced forward with space on 21 minutes, making it to the left of the box before teeing up a shot – the ball rolled wide of the near post, with David Worrall crying out for the pass to his right.
Poleon was back for more moments later, but his volleyed effort hit the stanchion to the left of the near post.
GOAL! Zac Thompson broke the deadlock on his Bury debut after 36 minutes – Tom Hopper dragged Mark Gillespie away from his net, before passing to Thompson on the edge of the box, who buried the ball in the bottom corner.
