A delighted Kevin Blackwell on the Carlisle United performance
“I feel for the players after that, I said last week that if we are going to move up the table, it will be about performances. On Saturday we saw a really good second half performance, but on Tuesday evening, we’ve seen a 90 minute display. I have nothing but praise for the players; from start to finish they were absolutely fantastic.
Trevor Carson has not had a save to make and that is exactly what I am looking for from the players and if we keep doing that, we will a lot more game than we lose. Fate will certainly be in our favour one day.
Their goal at the end was just unfortunate; in any game the opposition will have an opportunity. The lads deserved a break, but they didn’t get it. Tom Hopper had a good chance just before when he was one on one with the keeper, but he gave everything in that game. We could have won two or three games in that game with the chances we had. The final ball at times was maybe lacking, but overall we’ve seen a massive change in the performance of the players. That’s what I was brought into do, and hopefully now we start to see that.
We are a lot closer, we were winning every second ball and Carlisle were hanging on there. We have to give them credit because that is exactly what football and any sport is about. You have to hang in there when things are tough and get something out of it. Carlisle took something out of that game, it’s very unjust for us but that’s life.
There are key ingredients that you need in any team, I have been trying to look for it and trying to get it, but we had a lot more pace in that performance, we were sharper all over the place. If we keep doing that, I will be very happy. I have nothing but praise for the players, they were fantastic.
The two you lads from Leeds are absolutely out on their feet after that. This wasn’t an under 21 game, this really matters. Young players have got to be let out on loan, even if clubs cannot pay all their ages, or any of their wages. Clubs have got to give these kids a chance. Both Zac (Thompson) and Dominic (Poleon) found it tough physically, mentally – everything.
For them, the warm up matters, every time they train matters, when they travel in – it matters and I am really pleased with both of them, the whole team. I couldn’t pick any of them out, they were just fantastic – all of them.
I can’t thank Neil Warnock enough; Neil has to take a lot of credit for what happened here on Tuesday evening. He gave me an opportunity for me to get two players in that a couple of clubs were after so I have to thank Leeds United and Neil Warnock in particular.
I think we are close to getting what I want now, we are very close. We’ve seen games that we could have, and should have won, but you have to be able to get in positions to win games and now, we are in those positions. I think we are very close to winning games.
We knew the next goal was crucial, we think we could have gone on but to concede in the 80th minute like that hurts. It’s the last few minutes of games, it hurts.
The existing players are warming to how I do things now, they know now. My record says I know how to win games. I love to get to finals, and I’d love to get to a final with Bury. They are getting used to my methods, if they don’t, they won’t be here for too long.
They know it’s tough, and it has been tough for them. I have been hard on them, some may say perhaps a little too hard, but that is the response I am looking for. If players want to play for me and Bury Football Club, then they have to give that effort.
I think the fans were pleased with what they saw, it was end to end, it was action packed and the first half in particular was all one way. We are getting close to results with the performance, and I just seen a very good performance from my players. We know what we need to do and we will keep doing it.
If you see that performance every week, you will say that this team cannot be bottom of the league – but we are, so we have to make sure we get off it.”
