The icing on the cake

Marlon Jackson gives his reaction to his first Bury goal, and looks forward

Marlon Jackson scored his first goal for the Shakers during Saturdays 3-0 win against Accrington Stanley and following the game he spoke with the press to give us his reaction to the goal, the win and his future plans whilst at Gigg Lane.

‘I feel really good after that, the sooner you get your first goal the better and obviously I’ve done that now but the main thing was to get three points for the team.  We’ve had two really good performances but have let it slip with a few mistakes.  We’ve cut them out this weekend against Accrington and have taken the three points which is the most important thing for us.  The goal was just the icing on the cake for me.

Last weekend, even though we went down to ten men, we had more possession than Oxford.  They just seemed to put the ball in the back of the net at the right times whilst we didn’t.  We have played well in both previous games.  On Saturday we didn’t play as well as we can but we’ve got the three points and those three points matter.

We didn’t want into get to the situation where we are chasing other clubs for points, we want to be up there and the points are the most important things in getting towards the top of the table.  Performances have been there and now we just need to put them all together to win games.

We’ve also taken our first clean sheet, and if you’re keeping clean sheets then your winning games.  As a striker you never get a bad goal, but on Saturday we saw three good goals.  We’ve created plenty of chances in games so to see them going into the back of the net – there’s nothing better.

I left Hereford at the end of last season and was literally training on my own with a fitness coach.  I was also looking for a club to come up and the gaffer took a chance.  He asked me to come up and train, I played a game at Blackburn and scored two goals.  After the game he asked me to come back and said they would look at me and told me he would get me fit.  He’s done that and signed me up within a week; he was obviously impressed with what he saw.

He signed me and has told me that he doesn’t think I am complete and that I have to work on my game, but he’s been brilliant working with me.  I know I am part of the development squad, I’m still quite young but obviously I want to play every game that I can.  The coaching staff here is brilliant and they do a lot of work with me and its working really well.  I just want to keep improving now.

Obviously this is a league two club, but it doesn’t feel like that.  The way we travel and the way the staff are.  It feels like we should be a lot higher than where we actually are.  It’s brilliant for the players and we all get all the help we need, whether it’s in the new gym or on the training ground, it’s just all perfect for us.  We have the players, we have the staff, we have the facilities and we have everything we need.  If we keep putting the results in like this then we will be up there.

I want to put my roots down now. I’ve signed for the year but obviously if I do well then you never know what will happen.  I want to be here scoring goals for Bury.  I want to keep my position, be a good Bury player and do as well as I can here.’
