Very enjoyable

2 August 2013

Gareth Roberts on being named skipper and pre-season

“I’ve been here three or four weeks now and I’m really enjoying it.  Obviously the manager has been busy throughout the summer and has brought in lots of players.  It’s a whole new squad for the club but we are all looking forward to the start of the season now.  The gaffer has been busy and he and the chairman have been fantastic throughout the summer.

Even though we have a new squad full of good players, there is no thought of waltzing this division.  We all know that we have to work hard as a team; hopefully if we do that, we will get our rewards on the field.

Last season at Derby County, I had championship players all around me, but here – from what I have seen, we have some really good players at the club.  The gaffer has brought plenty of quality into the club.  We’ve been working all week on how he wants us to play the game; it’s been really good and very enjoyable.

I think I was the first signing to be announced over the summer.  I got a phone call from the gaffer and I came here the next day to take a look around.  I had received some interest from a couple of clubs, but after having spoken to the manager and he impressed me with what he said, the deal was all done within a couple of days and I’m happy to be here.

There’s a lot of things happening here, everything that the chairman said would happen, has happened.  The Chairman has been fantastic with all the work that he had done.  You just have to look around the place at all the work that’s going on, it’s brilliant to see, and hopefully we can match all the work being done on the pitch.

Nothing was mentioned about being made captain when I came.  The gaffer pulled me last Friday after a practice match and told me that he was going to make me the captain.  It’s a nice gesture and hopefully now I can lead the lads on the pitch.  I’ve not been captain from the start of the season before, I’ve done it half way through at Doncaster, but I’m looking forward to it, it’s a different challenge I’m looking forward to getting the season started now.’
