We have to dig deep

11 August 2013

Reaction from Euan Holden to defeat at the Kassam Stadium

Speaking to Shakers Player following the 2- defeat at Oxford, Euan Holden believes the side has the ability to do better in order to get that first win of the season

‘We are all frustrated after that result.  Like last weekend against Chesterfield we have played well for large parts of the game.  At the end of the day you play well for 80 or so minutes you expect a better result, but we will build on this for the next game.  We want results because that’s what matters

We made hard work of it at times, we felt we played well enough at times as a team, but we know that we have to keep clean sheets, not make little mistakes and give away silly goals, especially after we have worked so hard to get back into the game.

We’ve worked hard yet we’ve conceded six goals in a week.  The gaffer and his staff work us hard on set pieces and defending set pieces is crucial, especially in a league like this.  It can be the difference, especially if your keeper has only had one save to make in the three games, but we are giving away goals and it’s obviously something that we need to work on.

We have to work on it; it’s about being ruthless and getting back to basics.  It’s great to score four or five goals, but if you’re giving up more goals than you are scoring then you’re losing games.

We were well prepared for the game and we knew that Kitson and Smalley would be going down at the slightest of touches.  We are prepared well for every game.  When it comes down to the nitty gritty of it all, you have to dig deep.  It’s not always going to be a pretty game, at the end of the day we all want the result and you do whatever it takes to get that.

I am getting stronger and fitter every game.  This has been one of the hardest pre-seasons that I have had.  It’s not just about the hard work, a lot of players have come in, but we have a lot of good guys in the dressing room that have come together with a tight bond, despite how many new faces we do have, but we need to turn this around and start to get some results.

Perhaps we’ve jelled quicker than people thought we would.  We had that week away which has helped us.  I don’t think there is a bad egg in the dressing room.  We all want the same thing, we all want to win and we all want promotion, but now it’s back to basics and work hard for next weekend.

For the goal, Gareth Roberts has done well to get the ball in, Tom Soares then did well to flick it onto me and I was just fortunate enough to be in the right place, then Tom has made a great run inside and was able to get on the end of it to put it away.

We saw against Chesterfield and then on Tuesday in the Crewe game, that we do have the ability within the squad, but now we have to do it for 90 minutes.  We can’t do it for 80 or 85 minutes, we have to do it for the full 90 minutes and dig deep.  Even though we are a young side, there is a lot of experience within the side, we can’t use the fact that we have young players as an excuse, it’s down to all of us to dig deep now.’
