Craig Jones on the Capital One Cup victory over Crewe AlexandraFollowing the 3-2 victory over Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday night, Shakers Player spoke to Craig Jones on the win and he expressed his delight about being in the hat for the second round draw, plus tells us of his disappointment following the opening game of the season against Chesterfield. He also revealed how much work he puts into putting balls into the box…
‘It’s just nice to be in the hat for the next round, that’s the main thing to come from the night but it took us going a goal down to get going. We didn’t look back after that to be honest.
It was hard to see the difference between the two divisions, but to be honest, this club should be in league one anyway. We were unlucky with the situation that the club got itself into last season, we do feel that we can compete with sides like Crewe.
We competed with Chesterfield on Saturday, but their goals were a bit of a sucker punch to us. We should have been out of site in the first half. We could easily have been three or four up. We put plenty of balls into the box but they just wouldn’t drop for any of the lads, but if we keep playing like this, then somebody is going to get turned over.
On Tuesday we reacted a lot differently to going a goal down than we did on Saturday. Saturday was a sucker punch for us because we did have so much of the ball, especially in the first half but when they scored I don’t think we could believe that we were actually losing the game. After their first goal, we restarted very slowly, but kicked on in the game on Tuesday.
Two of the goals on Tuesday came from defenders, we all have to chip in with goals, it’s not just down to the strikers in the box. That was one thing that let us down last season, so hopefully luck will improve on that this season.
The crosses into the box is my game, I work hard on that delivery every single day and if I can keep putting the balls in the box like that then hopefully the lads can put the chances away. We work on it every day in training, but myself in particular put a lot of work into getting the ball into the right place in the box. They are important pieces of play for us and the third goal on Tuesday was evidence of that.
The Crewe game was only the second 90 minutes that we have had together as a team, we can only improve on that plus you look at the bench, we now have a bench that can make a difference. Anyone of them can come on and make a difference. The gaffer has pulled a good squad together and hopefully we can do well this season.
Hopefully now we can get down to Oxford at the weekend and just carry on from where we left off on Tuesday. We need to start picking points up now, it was disappointing to lose the first game but it was a tough game and they are one of the best sides in the league, but we are a good side as well We went to win every game and see where it takes us.’
