New skipper Craig Jones reflects on a new gaffer and the Northampton game“We had an excellent start, but it turned into a bit of a grind towards the end. Obviously the pressure is on a little bit because we haven’t picked up as many results as we would have liked, plus with the new gaffer coming in as well, we’ll take the point and build on that next week.
The new gaffer has made a few changes and you could see form the first half that we tried to play a lot more football, which is what we all want to do and I’m sure it’s what the fans want to see and what the chairman wants. We’ve only had four days with the gaffer and it’s not going to turn around straight away. We couldn’t play as much as we would have liked to but we will put the work in on the training ground and he will get us back playing football.
That first half summed the season up, we took charge, went in front and then gave a soft goal away but hopefully it will turn around now. We need to start putting them away and teams will be out of sight, hopefully we won’t have to be under pressure in the second half.
We’ve already seen from the new gaffer that he is full of enthusiasm, he loves being on the training ground and he wants us to play a good brand of football. I’m sure that will come in time.
The gaffer pulled me during the week and told me that he was going to give me a role more inside than out on the wing, and that I would be on top of the diamond. I really enjoyed that role and he wants to build a team where he can change formations throughout the game and not just have players in one position, so that’s something else we have to learn. I have played this role before when I was at TNS, but not for a long time. It’s a role I enjoy; I enjoyed it on Saturday and thought I did well there.
The gaffer has also given me the captain’s armband; he pulled me on Friday and told me that he was giving it to me after showing a great attitude in training. He told me it was fully deserved and I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to captain the side.
