January is a long way ahead

22 December 2013

David Flitcroft’s reaction to the 2-1 defeat at Home Park

‘Quite a few of the aspects of the game were good, our forward play at times is something that we have been working on, it was good, it was incisive and decisive.  There was one moment where Danny Mayor and Craig Jones linked up, if it had gone in, it would have been a goal to win any game, but you have to keep clean sheets to win games and the defending left a lot to be answered for on Monday and I cannot wait to evaluate the game properly.  I have to look at the defending aspects because it was very disappointing.

It’s not very difficult when you concede early on.  You have to keep that belief and keep believing.  You have to try and stay on the right path and we tried to do that.  The equaliser was a well worked goal, a deserved goal but to get caught on the sucker punch when we were dominating the game at times is a bit of a body blow.

I am seeing improvement, but this is not going to be a quick fix.  It’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better.  Its two years of hurt and two years of doing the wrong things – you are not going to fix it in two games.  I’ve got that two years to turn around and I am looking forward to doing that, but it’s definitely going to take time.

We are in the bottom two at Christmas, but this is not about where you are at Christmas, it’s about where you are at the end of the season.  I know where we will be at the end of the season and that will be league two.  There are a lot of hard games to come, tough matches but we will certainly be prepared for a fight.

Craig Jones has a groin problem.  We could have left him on but then if you do a ten day injury becomes a six week injury so we had to make sure that the player was thought of first.  Shaun Beeley was feeling a tight hamstring so he had to come off early.  The squad will be tested.  We didn’t lock the pitch down and now it’s back to the drawing board.

We need results, now I have to come up with a formula to get those results.  That’s what we will try to do whoever we play.  There are teams in this league who from a form point of view, are doing the right things.  We have to start doing the right things for 95 minutes.  At the moment, we are not doing that, we are doing it in stages and you are not going to get a consistent run of results if you do that.  We have to work for the full 90 minutes – at the minute, the lads cannot do that.

We need to get to January and at the moment it feels like a long time away.  We had Gareth Roberts on the bench but could not use him because he is not ready.  It’s crazy what has gone on at this football club, it’s almost negligence but that is something that I am going to have to eradicate quite quickly.

Some of the time off that these players have had and when you call on them, they are not ready.  I find that insulting to players.  Some of these players have been let down and it’s my job now to no let them down anymore.  When they come onto the pitch, they are ready to work flat out for the football club – that’s what I am going to do.’
