Youth:Bury 2 - Wigan 0

24 December 2013

Bury Youth Team v Wigan Athletic Match report Sat Dec 21st

Under blustery conditions Bury’s youngsters found it difficult to get their passing game going during the first half, giving the ball away cheaply with wayward passes far too often, giving Wigan the opportunity to counter attack. But Bury’s back 4 dug deep and defended well, stepping up to the challenge and limiting Wigan’s chances of entering the 18yd box.

The First half was a scrappy affair with both teams working hard but producing little quality, this was highlighted by the fact that both teams only had one shot each on target in the first-half.

The second-half was a completely different affair with Bury taking a strangle hold early doors. Both Bury full backs (Ben Potter, Matty Cook) pushed high into the Wigan half and played most of their football there for the majority of game, remaining a constant threat.

Bury’s midfielders (Scott Burgess, Liam Bickett, Sam Dickinson)  followed suit and pushed high making runs beyond the Wigan back 4, gaining possession and creating intelligent passes for the mobile and willing strikers (Anthony Dudley, Navid Nasseri, Brayden Shaw).

The young Shakers endeavours paid off in the 57th minute, when after a string of creative passing, Brayden Shaw saw Scott Burgess’ cleverly timed run and played a perfectly weighted pass for him creating a 1v1 with the Wigan keeper, Burgess kept his cool and slotted the ball under the keeper into the bottom right of the goal to take the Shakers in front.

Bury 1 – Wigan 0

After the restart, Bury continued piling on the pressure, moving the ball quickly from flank to flank supplying both full backs with plenty of the ball.

Bury stretched Wigan’s midfield and back 4 with good penetrating runs through the middle of Bury’s midfield and front 3 which paid dividends in the 67th minute. Anthony Dudley made a blind side run off the shoulder of a Wigan defender and was picked out again with a Brayden Shaw slide rule pass, allowing him to slot the ball again under the stranded keeper into the bottom right of the net, a carbon copy of the first goal.

Bury 2 - Wigan 0

Bury continued to apply pressure pinning Wigan into their own half and creating numerous chances with Navid Nasseri, Brayden Shaw and Sam Dickinson all coming close with well struck shots.
