Tom Soares looks forward to the new season“I was always pretty keen to come back to Bury, especially with the gaffer and the staff here. Plus with the new chairman and the new board that have come in. It will also be good to get paid for the job I am doing, it keeps the focus on the job. You try not to focus on things going on outside of the game, but it became difficult last season with everything that was going on off the field.
We should be having a good season; the boys are raring for it. The season can start tomorrow for me; I just want to get into the swing of things. It’s better than running around the training ground, and so far it’s been pretty tough. The lads have been working really hard and it’s looking really good. The signings that the gaffer has brought in are really strong and they all look really good, we do look like we have a strong squad.
Last season I felt stronger as the season went, but then got the hamstring injury which was pretty tough for me, but it was really disappointing for all of us towards the end. It was a personal goal for me to get back playing, but it was disappointing what was happening as a club off the pitch and getting relegated.
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. This is a new life for Bury Football Club with the new chairman and board coming in. A lot of the old players have gone and a new fresh bunch has come in. Now we need to get together pretty quickly.
It’s all positive at the moment, everything is being freshened up with the new gym, and everything around the club is changing. Players come and go, but I think this is all for the best. We’ve kept a few players, but they come and go, that’s a part of football, you just have to get on with it. You have to build a strong squad, which by the looks of it, the gaffer is doing.
Training is good, it’s very competitive and the gaffer has brought experience in. That will help us a lot this season. The young lads are really enthusiastic, now it’s about getting the balance right. The gaffer has been in the game long enough and he will know how to balance the squad.
Every footballer cannot get complacent, training is competitive and if we keep it going like this and keep this hunger then we will be in for a good season.
We are building this club from scratch, and it’s a great way to build. We will go out in every game to win and keep going for as long as we can.
The manager said many times last season that the game is won and lost in both boxes, and last season we let a few silly goals in – a lot of that is down to our luck last season, we all knew how tough it was to score goals. We looked really frightened at times, but now we have to build on it and hopefully it will all come together.’
