Ashley Grimes on joining Bury, pre-season and the first few games
"The move to Bury was sorted out very quickly, I was actually on the M6 on the way to Cheltenham and I had a couple of phone calls. Within a few hours the deal was done and dusted. It was pretty much a case of turn the car around and get to Bury. To be fair, it was a crazy day for me but I’m happy it’s all sorted out.
The gaffer sold it to me; he told me a few very positive things and the direction on where the club is going as well as some of the players that he wanted to sign. Plus with the location and my family all being around the area, it just all added up.
I’ve always seemed to score a few goals against Bury over the years, but hopefully now I can start scoring goals for Bury now. I’m sure my moving here will make the Rochdale game a little feisty, but at the end of the day, it’s just another game or two in a long season, hopefully a long successful season.
You can see the direction of the club just by walking in, there are plumbers, builders and decorators all over the place. You only have to look at the changes being made and when it’s all done it will be brilliant, it can only help the club move forward.
Pre-season has been tough, but I’ve enjoyed being back at it. After a while you’re sat home twiddling your thumbs and it’s just good to get back and get fit. I’m not of these that enjoy pre-season, but you just have to get on with it. It’s been very good so far and it’s good to get the chance to bond with the lads.
It’s the first game on Saturday and I’m just looking forward to a run out. I played at Radcliffe a couple of years ago, but it will just be good to get a run out and gate back into the swing of things.
Club Brugge on Wednesday will be a different test for us all, but it will all help us in our preparations for the Chesterfield game. We more or less know what to expect at Radcliffe, but we haven’t got a clue what to expect on Wednesday, but I’m looking forward to both games.
The manager told me that he is here to be successful. That’s the same for me, he wants to do well and I want to do well. I’m here to score goals, I’m here to play games and help the team be successful this season.
We will never discuss our plans as a club for the season, but you can see from the signings that the manager has made, that he means business. We want to be successful and we want to be fighting at the top end of the league.”
