Former Shaker Ronnie Jepson appointed assistant manager to Kevin Blackwell
Chairman Stewart Day is delighted to announce that former Shaker Ronnie Jepson has been appointed as assistant to Kevin Blackwell and takes up his position with immediate effect.
A former striker with 354 games and 86 goals to his name, Ronnie moved to Port Vale from Nantwich Town in 1989 and turned pro at the age of 25. Soon after joining the Valliant’s, he moved to Peterborough United on a loan deal before being sold to Preston North End for £80,000 in Feb 1991.
12 months later he was on the move again, this time to the West County and a spell with Exeter City before a move back north came – joining Huddersfield Town in December 1993 for £70,000. He stayed at Huddersfield for the next three seasons and helped them win promotion from the Second Division in 1995.
As the Terriers went up a league, Ronnie joined the Shakers for £40,000 in 1996 and helped the Shakers land the 1996 Second Division Championship. Whilst with the Shakers Ronnie made 59 appearances and scored twelve goals.
His success with the Shakers brought near neighbours Oldham Athletic calling a £400,000 cheque secured his services and a move to Boundary Park. He stayed with the Latics for around twelve months before he moved to Burnley before retiring, due to an Achilles problem, as a player in 2000.
After a spell coaching with Burnley, Ronnie was appointed manager at Gillingham in November 2005. He stayed at Priestfield for two years before tendering his resignation and returned to Huddersfield Town as a member of the backroom staff – his third time under the reigns of Stan Ternent. Since then he has coached with Crystal Palace, QPR and Leeds United with former Bury manager Neil Warnock.
Speaking exclusively to Shakers Player on Tuesday, Ronnie said:-
‘It’s good to be back, I have some great memories of this place and a lot of success here. When the gaffer rang me and offered me the job, I didn’t think twice. We had a quick chat and everything was sorted out quickly and I’m ready to go.
I know where this club can go and I know that Kevin Blackwell is very excited with the new ownership. In terms of the philosophy and where we are going to go, I am now a part of that and really looking forward to it.
I’ve met the chairman and the team behind him. This is exciting times for this football club. It’s a fresh start with new owners, plus I know Kevin from old. He wants to be successful and he’s a driven man, the same as me.’
Manager Kevin Blackwell also said this afternoon:- ‘I’d like to thank Peter Shirtliff for the work he has done for me and for the club during my time here, I’d also like to wish him all the best for the future.’
Blackwell also commented on the arrival of Ronnie Jepson by saying: - ‘I’m delighted to have Ronnie on board and it’s great to see him back at the club where he had so much success as a player. If he can do as well in management as the time he had here with Bury as a player, then it bodes well for the future for this great club and I am looking forward to working with him again.’
Ronnie will take over his role with immediate effect and is already at work with Kevin Blackwell.
