Meet the Bury FC Community Trust team: Sian Godwyn and her passion to develop volleyball

In the first of a series of profiles on members of the Community Trust staff team, we meet our resident volleyball expert, Sian Godwyn.

Volleyball is an up and coming sport in the UK, and the Community Trust is in a fortunate position that it has a fully qualified and experienced member of staff that is working to develop volleyball in the Bury area.

Sian has only recently joined the Trust on a full time basis, after working with the team as a casual coach on the disability programme. However Sian has been working to develop volleyball for many years, setting up the Bury Giants volleyball team and even officiated at volleyball during the London 2012 Olympic Games. Sian is a local girl, who grew up in Chesham and went on to attend Bury Church of England High School which she represented the school at hockey, football and volleyball before gaining her degree and gaining additional qualification in both coaching and refereeing volleyball. As Sian explained,

“Being part of the Olympics was an amazing experience. It is great to have been involved with this once in a lifetime opportunity, and being asked to be a line judge for the men’s gold final match in which Germany beat Brazil was something that I will never forget.

One of my career aims is to now try to encourage as many young people as possible to take up volleyball as it is the only hi-energy, zero body contact, mixed team sport that can be played both indoors and outdoors”.

Bury FC Community Trust currently runs two volleyball sessions for young people who would like to have a go at the sport , one on Tuesday at St Anne’s Church in Tottington  from 5pm-6pm (for children aged 7-11) and one at Bury Church of England High School, Sian’s old school, between 4.45pm-5.45pm for children aged 11-16.

The Trust is offering any Shakers fan a free taster session on either of the sessions. The free session can be claimed by calling the Trust and booking a place on a session. Please quote ‘Shakers’ to claim the free session when you are making the booking.
