Everybody is disappointed

7 October 2013

Kevin Blackwell reflects on the game against Newport

'Everybody is disappointed with the result. You won't get better chances than the ones we had in the first-half. We played some great football in the first-half, but if you don't capitalise on your chances then you don't win games. It was frustrating that we didn't finish off the approach play because in the first-half some of our play was excellent.

Navas would have finished his chance if that was in training. In training the lads have been knocking them in for fun; when they get on the pitch it's the pressure of playing on the big stage. The players are going out trying to please the fans. The game showed that even players of Navas' quality can feel the pressure.

In the second-half Newport turned the game into a battle which we knew they would. We had 2 or 3 chances in the second-half that we should have finished.

The Newport chairman approached Stewart Day after the game and spoke of his delight at finally getting back on the bus because he believed that they were second best.

We came away with a clean sheet and knowing that we dominated the game. It was difficult to say much to the players because they had played well. We played some great football, we just needed to finish off the approach play.

In regards to the three players who made their league debuts; Brian Jensen was assured as you would expect. Marco Navas played a tight game, he can really get in there and I'm really glad that he now has his first league game under his belt. Jordan Mustoe had a terrific game at left back, he hasn't played for a while but I thought he acquitted himself really well.

We now have to keep building and keep going. We can see the areas in which we need to develop the team. We need to work more on the final third to hold up play and become more clinical on the finishing. If we can develop these areas then we won't be far off. We are going to continue to work hard and try to identify players that will improve the team.

I'm trying to work to the best of my abilities with the players that I have got. We know that there are certain parts of our game that aren't quite right, but the players have got to keep believing in what they are doing and I have to keep encouraging them.

We have to show a little bit of patience and we've got sign the right players. If we have 1 or 2 players with a little bit more class in certain areas then we won't be far off.'
