Heads up and get at it

18 October 2013

Tom Soares on the week’s events and looking forward to Portsmouth

“Monday was a bit of a shock for us all, we were all under pressure because of the results and it was sad day for the club to see Kevin (Blackwell) go, but its part of football.  More importantly though, we feel we let him down.  The buck always ends with the manager.  As players we haven’t got the results that we need to get.

We were all in the dressing room ready to go training and the gaffer called a meeting.  Kevin came in and told the boys what was happening and wished us all good luck.  It was a bit of a down day but we have to keep our head up and keep at it.

Ronnie Jepson has the job now and it is looking bright.  He’s been in the game a long time, he knows the club and he knows football.  It’s brilliant to see him getting the chance like this.

He’s not done anything different; it’s been good fun and more or less the same.  He’s been around for some time now and he knows his football, I’m pretty sure he will do a fantastic job.

Personally, I think the whole team let Kevin Blackwell down.  It always falls on the manager, but we are the ones out there and we are the ones that haven’t been getting the results.  We haven’t scored enough goals or kept enough clean sheets.

I’ve not looked at the list of names that are being linked, whoever the chairman brings in – it needs to be the right person to come in and take the job.  Ronnie has it at the moment and if he can keep it then it will be brilliant.

Portsmouth will be a tough game, every game so far has been tough, but we need the points.  The boys are raring to go and obviously with the change that has happened this week, the boys just want to get out there and start putting some performances together.

We know there is something missing from our game; we just can’t put our fingers on it at the moment.  The performances have been brilliant at stages, but we need to score goals and see games out, stop conceding silly goals.  As soon as we sort that out, we will go on.”
