It Has Been a Good Week

11 October 2013

Kevin Blackwell on the last seven days and looking forward to Morecambe

After a busy week in training, Kevin Blackwell talks about his teams focus on Saturday's game against Morecambe.

'It’s been a good week this week we’ve been concentrating on how we beat Morecambe. If we would have finished off the chances that we had against Newport then we would have come away with 3 points. It’s now all about trying to get a settled team.

We are making sure that we do as much team bonding as we can, we make sure that all the lads train together at every session and that every player knows his role within the team.

The changes to the team in previous games have been down to injury or that the players haven’t been up to the standard that we are looking for; it’s as simple as that. Players need time to learn about the way in which team plays and also about the strengths and weaknesses of their partners - we are trying to get that understanding but it takes time.

Going into the game against Morecambe Marco Navas is out with a hamstring injury and Jessy Reindorf is out with a hernia. It is frustrating as it seems like it is one step forward and then two steps back. I think that Navas played really well last Saturday against Newport. Navas’ hamstring was the reason why he came off during the game. He had been desperate to start in the league but we felt he was just off pace, but with extra work and some games with the development team he started to show real quality, so Saturday felt like the right time to start him. His attempt on goal on Saturday was the cause of the injury as he tweaked his hamstring as he stretched for the ball.

Ashley Grimes, Marlon Jackson and Tope Obadeyi all returned to training this week and will be available for selection on Saturday.

At the moment I feel as though there are 3 or 4 players who aren’t grabbing the opportunity to take the shirt and make it their own. I think I now have 5 or 6 players nailed on so I’m pleased with that, it’s now getting the other 3 or 4 nailed on then I’ll be happy.

Our weak area has been in the final third, we knew when the season started that upfront was our Achilles Heel. It is an area that I am still trying to get nailed down. We’ve looked in several places for a striker but they come at a premium.

Anton Forrester is still on a learning curve and after Saturday’s came against Newport I just felt that he needed a bit of a rest as he looked a little jaded. It’s frustrating for me because he’s my main goal scorer, but I realised that if I kill him off too much then my main goal scorer has gone. It’s a balance of trying to look after Anton whilst trying to get the goods for the club.

Morecambe are on a 7 game unbeaten run. They are very direct. There’s nothing flashy about them they are just a very hard working team, they have no star individual they work together as a team. They have shown a great ability to come back from behind. At the moment they are on a really good run and there’s nothing better than being on a good run.

It’s nice that we are gaining the reputation of being a footballing side and that if you come to Bury and don’t dig in you’ll be blown away.

We know where we are and we know what we need we have just got to be patient.'
