Kevin Blackwell talks about Dagenham and Redbridge, Newport and newcomer Jordan Mustoe
‘We were disappointed with the result last week at Dagenham & Redbridge. We felt that we could have had the three points, but to gain three points you have to work harder than we did. It was a frustrating game on Saturday because we didn’t play as well as we can, yet we had 14 shots with 9 on target to their 3.
The fans were right to vent the frustration last week because player for player we were better than Dagenham. Being better player for player isn’t good enough if you are not going to try harder than the opposition.
I have said to the players that we really have to step up to the plate because more is expected. Bury Football Club has come a long way in 12 weeks and I want the players to come along with it. We’ve set a high standard and we don’t want to see the players fall below it.
This week Jordan Mustoe has come into the club, he is a young left back who went out on loan last season from Wigan to Carlisle and did quite well there. We’ve never really had much strength in depth with the left back position as we’ve only had Gareth Roberts then after that we are struggling, so I wanted to bring some competition for places in. Mustoe has a good left foot, he joins in play and he has a good eye. Hopefully he’ll bring in that extra bit of quality. I’m looking forward to him being at the club and putting players under pressure.
In regards to Newport, they dropped out of the league and if I’m not mistaken they were almost defunct for a year or two but the fans and the people of Newport weren’t prepared to let the Football club die. You have to give credit to Newport and what they did to get back into the Football League. If you think where Newport where, we are ahead of where they were but we are only at the start of our journey.'
