11 September 2013

Shakers development squad take a 2-0 win against the Blackburn Rovers development side.

The Development squad travelled to Blackburn Rovers for a friendly on Tuesday afternoon, and the game saw a return to action for Tom Soares following his foot injury.

The game started very brightly with both teams looking to get the ball down and play attacking football. In a competitive opening to game that saw a number of strong challenges from both sides; the first real chance fell to Bury.

An out swinging corner from Rooney found the giant figure of ‘Jesse’ at the far post who headed across goal only for his header to be cleared of the line from a Blackburn defender.

Blackburn were next to threaten when they broke quickly into the Bury Half only for excellent defending from Hinds to turn the ball away for a corner.

As the half came to a close Good interplay from Holden and Soares down the left ended with the ball falling to the feet of Rooney whose curling effort floated inches wide.

An evenly contested first half ended 0-0 with both teams playing some excellent flowing football.

The Second half started as the first half finished with some crunching challenges and free flowing football.

On 55 minutes first year scholars Ben Potter (replaced Hinds) and Brayden Shaw (replaced Soares) entered the game. Shaw made an immediate impact by scoring the opening goal of the game.

Excellent combination play between Rooney, Reindorf and Sedgwick resulted in the ball finding its way to Shaw at the far post who coolly slotted past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Blackburn began to press for an equaliser and almost found it from a header off an in swinging free kick that forced Charles-Cook into an excellent reflex save.

With Bury looking increasingly dangerous on the counter attack they secured victory with an expertly taken goal from Rooney. Jesse broke away after a good ball from McDermott, before finding Rooney who turned his man before coolly curling the ball into the bottom corner.

Walker replaced Jesse in the 78 minute. And Bury saw the game out for a 2-0 victory.

Development coach Ben Futcher gave his thoughts after the game:  “It’s fantastic to come up to Blackburn for these games and they always look after us and have superb facilities.

On the game itself, I thought it was an excellent exercise and allowed a number of players to get vital game time. I was delighted with the way the players went about their jobs and I thought we played some fantastic football against a good Blackburn side.

The boys worked really hard to stop Blackburn playing then showed real quality and purpose when attacking, so it’s good to see all the work in training paying off.  It’s nice to see some of the young Scholars coming into the squad, we are trying to integrate them into the development group and they will benefit from training and playing with the younger pros on a regular basis”.

“It’s always good for players to win games but the manner of the performance was very pleasing today’.
