Team News – Bury: Usually in his pre-match interviews, you ask the manager about the next opposition – he has a standard answer – it’s the next game, its important. Though this week, he gave us a different answer – ‘this isn’t just another game – this is the derby game, and it matters’.
Kevin Blackwell is prepared for his first East Lancs Derby game, and his first visit to Spotland as Bury manager. He’s been involved in many big derby games with previous clubs and knows exactly just what to expect.
The players know what to expect, even the foreign lads know what to expect. Big Jessy Reindorf knows all about this game, Marco Navas knows all about this game and William Edjenguélé knows all about this game.
Local rivalry aside though – Bury head into this game with a worrying number of injuries. Trevor Carson who missed the midweek defeat at Port Vale could return to the first team, whilst Rob Lainton must wait for a visit to see a specialist on Monday before a return between the sticks is considered.
Eight changes were made on Tuesday evening, because of knocks and tweaks to several key players. Whilst the manager and his staff are refusing to name exactly which of the key players he is referring to, we’ll all know come 2:15pm on Saturday as the Shakers side is named. Will it bring a surprise to us all or will we simply shrug our shoulders and get on with it.
The big difference this season though, if a player drops out for injury – another steps in, one that is equal to the one missing, who that can do a similar job should it be needed. Tom Soares hasn’t been seen in nearly three weeks now – and he’s hardly been missed or mentioned.
Strength and depth is certainly a major asset to Blackwell’s squad ahead of the game on Saturday. Just who the mystery injury is remains as secret as the whereabouts of the Holy Grail.
With so many players missing on Tuesday, it will be hardly a great surprise to see more changes on Saturday as the ‘first x1’ are recalled – allowing the development XI to watch form bench and stand. We’ve now got the option to have a side in the stand, watching and learning…
