Supporters deserved better

22 September 2013

Assistant Manager Ronnie Jepson talks about the team’s performance against Southend

'We started the game really brightly. We dominated the start of the game for 15 – 20 minutes, which we were really pleased about. We were undone by a sloppy goal that stemmed from our throw in. We had been on the front foot attacking Southend at will, but as soon they scored it took the wind out of our sails.

At half-time there were one or two heads down, the lads believed we should have had the lead so we had to rally round. The positive that we can take from the game is that we kept going and dug in and came away with the point. A point could be a vital point come the end of the season.

We know that it's a building process with the team but we don't want to keep giving the players that as an excuse. Some of the errors and goals that we have let happen are basic fundamentals, that as players they should know.

Danny Mayor came on at half-time and he was superb, he gave us a different outlet. When Danny is one on one with his man he pushes forward and takes him on. All that said, Danny will be disappointed with his final ball today.

We took Tom Soares off at half-time because he hadn't trained much this week due to a sore hamstring; he had only trained with the team twice this week for a short period of time. We needed a tactical change at half-time in order to freshen the game up.

At Bury Football Club we want to be winners and we want to give the supporters something to cheer about. The fans deserve it; they've backed the team brilliantly this season. We now need to kick on, we are more than capable of winning 3 or 4 games on the bounce but the lads have got to believe that.

It is a building process but we can't hide behind that, the supporters don't want to hear that. The supporters want to see us getting points on the board and being committed. I know what the supporters are like here at Bury they're a genuine bunch if they see you giving 100% then they will back you and if they don't they will let you know, and rightly so.

In regards to Dagenham & Redbridge next weekend it's a tough place to go. It's quite a small ground so they can bomb it at you. We know what is coming so we set the lads up and tell them exactly how they'll play, we just need to perform. We need to work on keeping clean sheets and taking pride in our defending. We need to defend as a unit as a back four and defend better than what we have done at times this season.'
