They showed more desire

29 September 2013

Kevin Blackwell's reaction to the 2-1 defeat at Dagenham & Redbridge

'I have had a chat with the senior pros and they have held their hands up, they know that they have to do more.

In the first-half Dagenham & Redbridge had one shot on target and it went in. We were comfortable in the game we just didn't do enough. If we would have opened up then I believe that we could have won the game. We didn't show the quality in the final third once again and that seems to have been missing for the past three weeks. At no point throughout the game did Dagenham have us under any real pressure. The frustration is that Trevor Carson hardly had a save to make, if we are not being worked by the opposition then we shouldn't be conceding goals.

To do well in league 2 you have to have a desire and ambition – we didn't show that enough today. Dagenham showed more desire than us in the key areas. I expect more from the team and especially from the senior pros; who have held their hands up and excepted that they need to take more responsibility.

We know what we have at the club and we know what we are trying to build, it's going to be a frustrating situation until we can get it all right. I haven't worked with these players before and they haven't worked with myself so I'm going to learn a lot about them.

The front four were poor today as well as the previous two weeks. It seems as though they're resting on their laurels, that is why I need to try and shake it up a bit. I'm still wary of putting pressure on players that aren't quite ready.

In terms of brining in a few more players, I have used the loan market as much as I can. If I bring another 1 or 2 players in then that would take us over the limit and I would have to leave players out. At the moment all our loan players are playing so that makes the situation tricky.

Building a new team at Bury inside 6-8 weeks is one of the biggest projects that I have ever come across. I have a brand new work force who I have to work with to give them the confidence and courage and help them learn what is required, the problem is that instead of having 1 or 2 of players I have 26 players to do this with.

Overall we are not a million miles off were we need to be, but we are definitely missing something and it will take time to get that right.'
