Shakers confirm Joe Thompson and Joe Widdowson
Bury Football Club are delighted to announce that Joe Thompson and Joe Widdowson have both agreed deals to remain with the Shakers into the new season after both players have successfully come through pre-season with the squad on a trial basis.
Joe Thompson joins on a free transfer after leaving Tranmere Rovers over the summer and has signed a 12 month deal. The 25-year-old midfielder, who was out for the majority of last season after battling to overcome cancer, Joe was only given the all-clear - that he was in full remission - by doctors in June after undergoing a six-month course of chemotherapy.
Speaking on Twitter over the weekend, Joe described his feelings by saying: ‘Bury have given me the opportunity to rebuild my life and get my career back on track. For that I am truly grateful’. Joe takes squad number 14 and goes straight into the squad for the weekend’s opener against Cheltenham Town.
Another new face that will no doubt be involved over the weekend is Joe Widdowson. Released by League Two rivals Northampton Town at the end of last season, Joe comes to the club with a wealth of experience and is obviously a player that manager David Flitcroft knows well having served under the gaffer at Rochdale. Joe takes squad number 21 with the Shakers and has signed a short term deal.
Meanwhile, we can confirm that defender James Burke has left the club by mutual consent. Signed last season from Huddersfield Town, James leaves the JD Stadium with our thanks and very best wishes for his future career.
